How fast a broadband do i need?

My contract is finishing soon, i'm with Fibrus atm.

Possibly looking at moving, depending on what they say.

Whats the minimum speed i should go for?

Their is just myself & partner. We use it for emails, watching amazon prime & surfing the net.

We get 70 max here and do nothing above what you do, and works absolutely fine, we dont feel we need to pay for anything faster

What speed do you currently have?

I have Virgin M125 which gives a download of around 132 Mbps and I can stream 4 screens without any issue along with browsing at the same time.

You probably need far less than you think, but for streaming a stable and lag free connection is vital.

I have just looked into moving ISPs and there were some good deals with vouchers and cashback, with one, Sky, offering 1 Gbps for less over 24 months than their 250 Mbps offering.

just the same requirements as you for two people. I was getting 64 mbps but just switched to FTTP and getting 140 mbps, both speeds do the necessary.

When I was with Plusnet, pre FFTP, I got about 64mbps which was more than adequate.

Now with Sky paying less and getting 1Gbps. Don't need it but moneysaving and all that.

With copper being phased out, by the sounds of it, even the slowest FTTP (Full Fibre) package would work for you e.g. 75/100+ Mbps).

Don't fall into the marketing hype, virtually no household needs most of the packages that are offered today. Especially not for emails, watching amazon prime & surfing the net. Even if you had a couple 4K tv's running simultaneously you'd be fine.

As a rough guide , watching a HD stream , around 5Mb , watching a 4K/UHD stream 25Mb, browsing, email etc in comparison negligible, for many non intensive families 50Mb will probably be more than adequate , FTTP tends to start at 150Mb and go up , so if an ISP on Openreach FTTC is being considered, 50-80 Mb will be more than adequate, if other FTTP networks possibly Openreach FTTP or a different Alt Net to Fibrus is available or VM , then 150 Mb will probably be more than sufficient for your needs , 500 Mb or faster is probably overkill as you won’t get near exceeding that .

Depends on how much you do concurrently… if you want to be able to update the OS on both your phones, both your laptops which both watching 4K streaming content. Likewise do you have any smart devices, particularly video cameras or doorbells that are streaming constantly?

Is it just Prime? as they have the lowest bit rate requirements, AppleTV by comparison can go up to 40Mbps for the same content.

What you need and what you should get may also be different answers, sometimes its cheaper to go for a higher rate even if you dont need it.

Sky do slower speeds for less, so not really great money saving 😀

For light use and streaming you actually don't need a lot. I've been in remote holiday cottages with 10meg and not had any issues streaming.
