Echo Waze, as it takes traffic into account. But you may find that when routing you through the roads works, it is because it is quicker than other routes. Due to everyone else having the same idea.

    Can I suggest the old-school solution here…?

An AA atlas for the planning, a piece of paper and a biro for notes and prompts for the first time, then a functioning short-term memory?

Given that you say "nearby" do you really need to use a route planner at all? Surely you know your own area well enough to find alternative routes.

Google own Waze, the underlying data is basically shared between the two including police reports

Maps actually tells you "there is a 10 minute delay ahead, you are still on the fastest route". I've tended to find the alternative routes are only quicker if you are among the first to pick them, otherwise you get every Maps/Waze user trundling along country lanes in a procession and probably don't save anything as it doesn't update the slow traffic until you are already part of it!

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Yes google do own Waze, but it is still a separate system & works in a different way. Or at least does not show the same routing.

But agree that once people start following updated routes, they can end up slower.

Google maps is incredibly frustrating that even when a road is closed long term it will still think you can go that way.

Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

Another vote for Waze, when my OH was in hospital in Grimsby, Waze often found a different route each day but I was never stuck in a queue.

It warns of speed camera vans too…
