I'd expect the chances of it working to be 50:50. I've had some which do work and some which don't.
"All systems are functioning normally master"
"How can you say everything is functioning perfectly?"
"I didn't. I said 'normally'"

One issue with using a phone sim in a data only device is the network may send texts to you and will treat those texts as received by you. They may also send you emails or they may not. It may be worth popping the sim in a phone every so often to check for any messages.

One thing to look out is FUP as even some unlimited plans have limit/cap on them.

We use a Zyxel 4g router at work with a 3 phone sim.
It does get texts about billing dates etc, these are viewable in a tab if you login to the router.

I use Mobile Broadband as my normal way of getting internet access. Three UK data sim only from scancom pre-paid averages out at (at the time of purchase) £9.10 a month and i get on average 670Mb/s. No texts or calls but it's otherwise truely unlimited.
Before you buy a sim hope over to cellmapper.net and find yourself and using the munu's select an operator one at a time and have a look at where the masts are and then think about buying a sim from the company that has a mast clossest to you.
