I keep the old patio slabs, as they have character. I'd plant long flowering small floors like Erigeron. For any missing tiles I'd fill in with stones. Zero need to spend out too much. It will have far more character if you use what you have or are resourceful.

My concern about the red bricks is the trip hazard they may pose, particularly in the dark.
