Store refund policy
Hi all,
My wife bought me a jacket on Saturday for my birthday that's in 2 weeks time.but I didn't like it.
I tried returning it today with all the original tags, not worn and the receipt but was told that they only give a credit note or exchange and not a refund.
One of the ladies who I spoke to said there was a refund policy sign at the tills.but when I checked the sign was there but totally see through (I did take a photo but don't know how to add it to the post) so it wasn't clear at all.
I did get the credit note as I felt like I had no other choice but is there anything else I can do or because they displayed their refund policy (as shoddy a sign as it was) I have no other leg to stand on
Id like to say if I have no other choice then fair enough and I just won't stop there again
Kind regards mark

There is no right to a refund statutorily unless there is something wrong with it. You were "lucky" to get a credit note.

If your wife bought it in a physical store (and not online), there are no legal rights to a refund or return when the item isn't faulty. Most stores have a refund policy thats a bit more relaxed than the legal position, as in this case.

You have no legal right to return/ exchange an item bought instore, unless it is faulty.
There is no me gal requirement for them to display a refund / exchange policy.
Any offer by the store is a goodwill gesture.

As above, no statutory right to a return for a change of mind, and if the policy says it's a voucher or credit for that situation, that's that.

Or possibly contractual rather than merely goodwill.

As others have said, no right to return unless faulty. Check expiry date of voucher too.

And even more so as the OP wasn't the purchaser so had no rights to return under any circumstances.

There is no legal right to a "change of mind" refund for items bought in store. Some retailers may choose to offer a refund policy that's more generous than the legal requirement, but that's entirely down to their discretion/internal policies.

The sign makes no difference - there's no automatic right to a refund for change of mind in a shop.
I'm not sure where the myth that there is originated from, but they don't have to do anything unless the goods are faulty so you've done well to even get a credit note.

That's not strictly true. If a sign says there is a policy where a change of mind return can be refunded, then the retailer has to adhere to that because it formed a term of the contract at the point of sale. I appreciate that wasn't the case here, but a retailer can't ignore their own policy and fall back to their lower lawful obligations.
