UC renter UC lodger
Hello, just researching b4 I start looking for a lodger. I'm receiving UC and child dla. I know I can rent a room out to a lodger and the income is disregarded. What happens if the lodger is also on UC? Can I give them a letter from me stating agreement details as proof of rent? Will they be entitled to the rent element of UC then? I receive 1450 from UC towards monthly rent 1950 so I'm 500 short pcm. I just wanted to cover this amount really. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Thank you.

Uh, my first thought is move to somewhere you can afford rent.
Getting lodger can be very complicated, if you get "wrong" kind of person.
You can contact UC and ask them what lodger needs for UC rent. I think this is right direction.3 -
Online there are lodgers agreement forms you can use.
UC do not like handwritten letters that just say Fred Bloggs is renting a room for £x per week from x date.
No problem renting a room to someone on UC when you are on UC.
The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.2 -

Before concerning the UC element, does your rental agreement with the LL allow you to take in a lodger? Sometimes, taking in a lodger is not permiited for rental accomodation. Can you move to a property that is more affordable, albeit without the spare room that you are proposing would be the lodger's room?

That was my first thought too - does your tenancy agreement allow you to take in a lodger? Google suggests getting written permission from your landlord to avoid any headaches down the road.

On the tax side you're covered as well. Rent a room is £7,500 a year tax free and tenants can use it too if your landlord agrees to the sublet. £500 a month is well under, so nothing to declare.
