If you want to keep calls/SMS active on your UK SIM then just turn off mobile data for that SIM. Otherwise just disable it, turning off roaming will have the same effect.

Does, of course, mean no phone service. Did you mean to say "buy a data + calls/SMS" SIM?

Is your UK carrier prohibitivly expensive for calls in CAN?

When you have two SIMs in the phone, although both may be active for incoming calls and texts (unless it really is only a data SIM), only one is active for data, so you find the choice in the settings

Besides that (and this is a separate matter in the settings) if your home SIM would charge quite a bit for incoming calls - which it might in Canada - yes you might well choose to switch off roaming

Thanks for the reply. I think a data only SIM would be OK. I'd do everything on WhatsApp.

Havent tried one but Amazon sell physical SIM cards that you can load esims onto, might be worth researching? Search esim adaptor.

I can recommend a Holafly esim for Canada, I used one back in June for Canada, worked perfectly
