Changing old banknotes
I’ve found an old paper £50 note and I have no bank nearby only a post office that wouldn’t change it.
is the only option to post it to the Bank of England or make a long to a bank (or give it to a charity- rather not donate the full amount £50 though)

Exchanging old notes at the Post Office
The Post Office will accept most old notes as a deposit into any UK bank account you can access with them.

Only some post offices - based on that link we have four near us but only one that will change notes, so you may still need to travel a bit.

There's a recent thread HERE albeit that was 5 grand not £50.
Nice day out to that there London, BoE to change the cash, their museum is well worth a visit.

I posted an old note to the BoE two or three years ago and the money was in my bank account very soon afterwards.

They won't usually change money unless you have a business account with that facility (i.e. they get paid for it)
Most current account providers except Nationwide should let you deposit it at the Post Office / Banking Hub.

However, your statement "Most current account providers except Nationwide should let you deposit it at the Post Office / Banking Hub" is wrong, because as @Woodstok2000 pointed out most Post Offices will not accept them.
Having checked the nearest to where I live I found that the closest five Post Offices that provide this service are in Manchester, Stockport, two in Liverpool and one in Leeds, which are respectively 7, 13, 28, 30 and 37 miles away, in an urban area where I have ten post offices within 2 miles of me. So the Post Offices that do this are actually few and far between.

Unless you live in a big city it might be easier to post old bank notes to the Bank of England. There's only one Post Office branch here in Sheffield offering the exchange service. The next nearest ones are Leeds or Stockport.

A physical branch where you hold an account will exchange it for you but you will have to pay it in and then make a withdrawal.
Up to you as to whether posting it to the Bank of England is the better option.
