Installing supplementary air to air heatpumps

Two units are now allowed, the major advantage of having two units outside is that if one fails you still have some heating. Next house, I am planning to reconfigure it so there is a single unit heating the lounge, which then heats the bedrooms when their doors are open… but it is only going to be a two bed bungalow and I like coldish bedroom and never heat the kitchen. Yes, I do live alone (happily!).

Keep in mind that while that works for heating (heat rises) it does not work for cooling.

… and the 2 external heat-pumps allowance is for detached property only.

So you cannot have an air con unit that cools down if the external unit is at a lower height?

Yes, you can cool with an external unit on the ground floor connected to an internal unit upstairs. The point being made was that cool air does not rise so you cannot rely on internal aircon units downstairs to cool upstairs. Heat on the other hand does rise so ground floor units will help with heating upstairs. Generally upstairs will be warmer than downstairs in both summer and winter because of the heat rising principle.

We have an aircon unit in the landing which does cool our hall and the the two central rooms off it quite effectively. We also have aircon in ground floor rooms at either end of the same hall but the airflow from them never cooled the two central rooms as effectively as the landing aircon does.

Some Cold air will get to the bedroom, especially with a strategically positioned fan… thnota said ‘bungalow’.

I have a split A2A system with two indoor units one in the living area and one in the main bedroom, I also have a conventional ASHP with radiators and water cylinder.

I am delighted with this set up with AC available in this continuing heatwave powered by solar and batteries with my main unit only heating water for the last 6 months. As stated in other posts these units also heat so if there is a requirement to boost the heat in my living room I can just switch on the A2A. This give almost instantaneous heat and warms up a large space in very little time.

As with most things these days the "LG" units are web enabled so can be managed from anywhere that has an internet connection.
