On holiday with missing luggage

Flew out on Saturday to Paphos. Landed 10.30pm and a load of passengers Inc us have missing suitcases (40 cases as we find out later)

Airport staff took our details and we were told it'll be investigated

TUI rep came to our hotel yesterday and took more details and comped us £100 per missing suitcase to buy essentials. Payable in 14 days. She sounded confident that they'll be found. We felt slightly better as it was quite a large number of missing cases. Plus one of the passengers at the airport said their air tag in a case was showing as being in Paphos.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation. Did it end well? Half my family, the female half, only had the clothes on their backs until we went shopping.

I suspect this will resolve positively.

Hope the missing cases turn up soon.

For the future, or to help others possibly being in the same position in future, splitting each person's belongings between cases, or at least putting one full set of clothes in each others cases, means that no-one is completely without belongings if a case goes astray.

Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

Oh dear, sorry to hear that. I've had ppl who got their luggage back and some didn't. I hope you get yours, esp as someone has a tag, they should try and trace.

I nearly got myself into a pickle. I once travelled to Brazil on a BA flight in 2012, via Sao Paulo, to the capital Brazilia, I was staying there for 3 months work visit. I didn't realise that BA wasn't pushing our luggage to the next flight (I booked via BA so assumed they'll transfer the luggage!), as myself and a lady I met on the flight were running to the next flight (that we nearly missed due to delays at the security clearance gate), we passed by the luggage area, and somehow I spotted my bag, I said "oh wait that's my bag", she pulled my hand to continue running and said "no it's not we're late". I pulled my hand ran to my bag, I heard her say "oh that's my bag" 😂😂... We ran even faster to check in, I'm surprised they allowed us to at that time, we got a ride to the flight.

I would have been in trouble for 3 months, esp as they couldn't speak English outside my work area. I doubt I would have gotten my bag back in another state.

On the couple of occasions this has happened to me the luggage has been delivered to the holiday address inside a couple of days.

Pretty much every travel insurance policy includes checked luggage being delayed/lost - they'll differ in just how much you can spend immediately to replace missing clothes etc.

    What does your policy say?

I can only imagine how much of a pain the loss of your luggage is. It's never happened to me but I have seen the Heinz advert on TV where the guy looses his baked beans.....absolutely devastating. Good luck, hope you're turns up.

Insurance is with Admiral but haven't thought there'd be a section on delayed luggage. I'll have a scan on their website and any policy documents they might have sent

As much as TUI will comp us a bit of money for things, we didn't come on holiday to shop for clothes etc

OK You will get over this, I think the one thing you will learn from this is what Jackie said, always split luggage, never put all one person's clothes in the same case.

If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.

They could be in the same cargo container given that they're checked in together. OP is talking 40bags gone missing.

Either way. The only real solution is to carry essentials and two extra full outfits in a carry-on bag.

    Great advice, Jackie.

This is something we've always done.

    Exactly half-and-half in each case.

Of course, it's not so easy if you are not packing at the same place.

I'm not sure how this works - being in 'the same container'.

Obviously we check in together but we've actually seen our cases being loaded on the conveyer belt as we've been sat on the plane and our cases weren't together then so may not have been in the same container.

And there have been instances where one case has come off amongst the first and the other almost the last.

In addition to packing half-and-half, we also take a change of clothes (for me a dress and sandals, for him a fresh shirt and of course undies and swimwear) in our hand luggage.

And we have airtags in each case.

Re the OP's situation, hopefully this will be resolved soon, especially if an airtag is showing up in Paphos.

Depends on the plane and the carrier but often checked luggage is put into standard-size containers like the ones below, other carriers do as you say and hand-load individual bits of luggage and secure that in place with nets in the cargo hold.
