    Sasha,
We have a 10 week old baby at the moment, and he now weighs 11lbs 4 ozs. However, he was 3 weeks early (5lb 11oz at birth) so he roughly equates to being 7 weeks old in terms of development. We started off with the smallest size and easily got through 200 of those. They lasted about a month.
I guess it really depends on how big your baby is when its born, and its not really something you can plan!
I'd recommend getting nappies around the 10lb mark, as whatever happens your baby will use them at some point. You should be safe getting at least 200 of those. My last Boots.com shopping list included 500 nappies!, and have found huggies and boots own brand to be the best.

    Good luck!

Ok, I know this is going to sound like a stupid question....but how quickly do newborn babies grow?

It's just that I want to do some online shopping & if I don't have quite enough to get the free delivery, I thought I'd top it up with any nappies on offer (i'm 29 weeks pregnant with first baby). Especially if the economy packs are on offer.

But most of the newborn nappies say 4-11lb or 6-13lb, and I wondered how long a baby would be in this size if it was, say, an 'average' weight at birth...I have no idea how many nappies a baby will get through in a day & don't want to be left with a stack of nappies that don't fit after a couple of weeks?

My boy was born on time, correct weight (not using the word average when it comes to my bundleicon10.gif) and he used newborn nappies for 6 weeks. He could have stayed in them longer according to the weights on the side of the packet, but he was getting through them quite quickly so we got bigger sizes to hold more...don't forget that cost per nappy is cheaper the smaller the size it is, so staying in smaller ones for longer is more cost effective. Average 6-8 nappies a day when first born, so I'll let you do the maths as I'm too tired!

Can heartily recommend Boots nappies, although we did find pampers holds in the runny poo best. (Jellyhead...my reusables were rubbish when Spud was tiny, so very wise to have disposables in as you'll need them.) If you're 29 weeks, then I'd go for about half and half newborn/next size nappies to make up your order. You will need more than you think, but we got newborn nappies from friends and endless freebies through the post, bounty bags and the like. And I don't know what time limits there are on Boots return policy, but if you keep your receipt, you can always exchange the smaller size for a bigger one.

And the 500 points offer has been available since I started shopping in Boots when I was 14 weeks pregnant...my boy is now 11 months old, so I guess you could say it's a long standing offer!

Went into boots today for nappies and if you sign up for the boots baby club, you can get triple points on buying huggies nappies. I also think you can get 500 free points if your child is over 3 or 4 moths old but under 2 years old. There is an offer of a free chaing kit ( I think) if you are pregnant or have a baby under 3 / 4 months old. Worth checking out anyway.

i've signed up but i think it said it would be a few weeks before i heard anything, the £5 gift voucher promotion will have stopped next week but it's still worth doing. looks like the 500 baby points promotion will be on for a while, there are sometimes total spend vouchers in the machine and the nappies seem to be on special offer regularly.

I used disposables with both babies until they were approx 5 wks old, much easier and much less hassle when you have a new born, i found very little difference between any of named brands and stores own nappies, although i still like lidl nappies but they don't do really nappies until about 9lb+

i've got 3 packs of newborn disposables and a load of samples. i bought some secondhand bambino mio nappies in newborn size though, the covers only fit up to 11lbs so i hope i'll get some use out of them lol! i bet i have a baby with a fat belly and they never fit him lol! another thing i didn't think of is washable nappies are quite bulky so they're massive under clothes, makes baby's bum look big and he'll probably need the next size up in shorts etc. just to fit over his nappy :rotfl:

the newborn huggies have 28 nappies to a pack, that will mean using probably 2 packs a week though, i think i need some more, will nip back into boots while this £5 gift voucher offer is on :D

Thanks for the helpful replies re how quickly babies grow...I think it's safe to say I was vastly underestimating how many nappies I would need, as I was probably only going to get a couple of economy-size packs (about 90-100) nappies...looks like he will be in the small size for a few weeks. Shows how much I know! I actually had a growth scan on Friday, as IVF babies can tend to be growth restricted, apparently...but he is doing well & they think he'll be about 7 1/2 lb full-term, so first size nappies will be OK for a while..though a friend informed me that scans are not very accurate when it comes to predicting birth weight. She was told she was having a 10-pounder, but he was 8!

It was actually sainsbury's I was going to do some shopping in, as I have a voucher for £10 off my next online shop (sorry, I can't share the code as it was emailed to me personally) & I noticed they have both huggies & their own brand nappies on offer. The voucher expires this week, & I have to spend £70 to get the free delivery, but I don't need £70 worth of food so thought I'd stock upon on the nappies while I'm at it.

I've also joined the Boots parents club, but noticed in their T&Cs that you don't get the triple points on Huggies if you shop online, only in-store. Not fair!

    hiya,
my babies have both been big at 9lb 8.5oz and 9lb 4.5oz........the larger my first dd was after having numerous scans and being told i was having an average if not small sized baby :rotfl:
my second dd who is now 10 weeks old i was monitered due to the size of my first and was told she was going to be quite a bit bigger and id easily top 10lb
    :rotfl:
i used the 6-13lb nappies with both for around a week then had to move onto the 9-20lb ones.........this meant i had loads of newborn nappies left but as they were unopened tesco and asda took back their own brand, pampers and huggies(had bought one of each pack as didnt know which would suit).

scans aren't always accurate no, and most people don't get growth scans here anyway, only if baby is thought to be much too big or much too small so they don't have any idea of the size of the baby. i had 5 scans with my first (they said i/he was too small), at the 38 week scan they said he would be 8 and a half pounds at 40 weeks but he was born a week later weighing only 6lb 15. i've had 4 scans with this baby, again for being small. the 34 week scan said he should be between 6 and 7 lbs at 40 weeks, i've got another scan next week. i'm not assuming he'll be a small baby though, as everyone says the scans aren't accurate and can be as much as 2 lbs out. i should buy some size 2 nappies really, i only have sizes 1 and 3 but we're going on holiday at the end of august and sharing a caravan with my parents makes me reluctant to take the washables and nappy bucket lol! baby should be 6 weeks old by then, might be in size 2 instead of 1 or 3. i haven't planned this very well have i lol! knowing they can be swapped makes things a lot easier :-) off to boots next week then - the £5 gift voucher expires on thursday anyway.

oooh no don;t go by growth scans, lol, I had loads fo scans when I was pregnant with my twins and each time they worried the heck out of me by saying they were extremely small, right off the bottom of the charts in fact so to expect two tiddlers.

well finally induced them out at 39 weeks and was presented with a 6lb6 twin one and a 6lb4 twin two!

i'm a cloth nappy agent but i used disposibles too at first to save buying tiny wraps then moved them onto cloth at about 6 weeks or so, found every brand of disposibles leaked though and made my washing pile huge, lol must just have a skinny bummed littly i think!

what is the £5 gift voucher for? any specific thing or is it just general boots? and is follow on formula included?
