I have a sony ericsson k800i which would like to have unlocked from the Orange network. The contract is finished and all paid up,it was on an 18 month plan. Orange have said that for £30 they would love to give me the code. Are Orange in the right to ask this fee as i think that i have more than paid for the phone what with add ons to my account and for that matter can any network charge for a phone you have bought and paid for? £30 pound seems a bit high and i expected them to say no charge. I know i could get the code from another source but why the hell should i pay?

Hi, you are correct. You bought the phone based on fullfilling a minimum term contract and have fullfilled that contract, therefore you should be given the code at no charge.
Unfortunately the Laws unto Thelmselves (networks) try and cream as much money as they can out of you leaving a bad taste in your mouth and not having the foresight to think they will lose a customer for good, instead of a customer that may come back.0 -
Orange have just advised me that it is Sony Ericsson lock the the phone not at Oranges request which is a load of rubbish. They also said that even though the contract has been paid i am charged due to not being loyal even though i have an ongoing contract with them that was taken out when the other was finished. I think it is about time that the law should be changed to allow all mobile users to have the unlock code free of charge from the network as it is MY/YOUR phone to do what you wish after the contract has been finished.end the tv tax0

SE will most probably lock the phones at the networks request them to be locked. for example, o2 contract phones are unlocked but their payg phones are locked.
what usually happens is the the networks request the code from the manufacturer (unless they already have it in their database) and send it out to you0 -
Orange have said that they do not hold the codes, something i am not to sure about this as i was told once i pay i will have the code that day! As far as i can see it if i want MY phone to carry any sim then that is MY choice and if a network makes the choice to lock it that is down to them and should not be at the cost to the user.end the tv tax0
