EDF billing

Hi, my father-in-law passed away in the middle of February and I took over paying the electricity direct debit at £50 per month. On March 2nd the meter was changed. Looking back through his bills I would say he hasn't had a "proper" bill since October 2024. he/we have been paying the direct debit each month and his balance has grown to nearly £870 in credit.

Obviously as no one is living there, the electricity usage is next to nothing the last meter reading submitted in the middle of June was 384.

Numerous emails to EDF have been met with the "we've sent this to billing" response, but we've heard nothing.

Starting to get a bit annoyed now and will email them again threatening to go to the ombudsman.

What is going to happen to the property?

If it's being sold then maybe just do nothing until you can shut the account down?

So there is a large credit balance in the account and you would like a refund. But the situation is complicated by the fact that the former account holder has died. So some of the credit balance is owed to you but most of it is owed to the estate of your father-in-law. Is that what "Billing" is struggling with? Did the account you are paying the DD from change when you took over?

Good that you submitted a reading in June. Do so again.

Double check that the meter change went through OK - look at a bill after March and look at the meter serial numbers on the bill and on the actual meter.

In the meantime set your own DD

Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill

On March 2nd the meter was changed.

Have you had a bill since the meter change? Does that bill correctly show the closing reading on the old meter (which should be recorded on a card or sticker next to the new one) and show the new meter's opening reading (likely to be zero)?

I would say he hasn't had a "proper" bill since October 2024 ... the last meter reading submitted in the middle of June was 384.

Have you received a "proper" bill now?

I took over paying the electricity direct debit at £50 per month.

That's £600 a year. £200 of that will be standing charge, and the remaining £400 is enough to buy about 1600 kWh a year (125 kWh a month) on the standard variable tariff.

the last meter reading submitted in the middle of June was 384.

So in a little over three months the property has used 384 kWh. That's a fairly close match to the 125 kWh per month that your £50 is paying for.

The last "bill" he got was in January 2026 which was just a list of credits and reverse charges from October 2024 to December 2025, which stated he had a credit of £568.38. There has been no bill since.

The reading submitted in June was, as far as I'm aware, automatic from the meter, I didn't submit anything.

I've been on at them since March to sort this out, but nothing is happening.

Not necessarily a refund, but I would like this sorted asap. I've no idea what they are struggling with as there has been zero contact from them.

All I did was change the account where the DD was coming from.

Er, no, i wasn't aware of that page. I will contact them though.

I'm not asking for a refund, just to sort out the billing so that I'm not left with a possibly large lump sum to find.

No, no bill since January. There is a sticker on the new meter with the last reading from the old meter. And yes the opening meter reading was zero.

Have you actually told EDF that the account holder has died? Are you the executor of the estate?
