Red-light camera offence – unclear stop-line evidence and white van nearby

Hi everyone,

I’ve recently received a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) for an alleged red-light offence in London.

The alleged offence occurred on 31/07/2026 at approximately 10:34, in the A13/Renwick Road area near Barking.

I have reviewed the photographic evidence provided with the NIP. The photos show my blue car, but I’m struggling to see clear evidence that my vehicle had actually crossed the white stop line while the light was red.

There was also a white van nearby, which is visible in the sequence/photos, and I'm wondering whether its position could potentially affect the interpretation of the images or the camera's view.

The position of my vehicle relative to the stop line isn't particularly clear to me from the photographs provided. I also haven't been provided with any video footage.

I understand that the key issue is whether my vehicle crossed the stop line after the red signal was illuminated, rather than simply where the vehicle was positioned afterwards.

For anyone familiar with UK red-light camera enforcement:

  1. Can the police normally provide additional/video evidence if the initial photographs don't clearly show the vehicle crossing the stop line?
  2. How important is it that the photographic evidence clearly establishes the vehicle's position relative to the stop line?
  3. Could the white van nearby have any relevance to interpreting the photographs?
  4. Has anyone successfully challenged a red-light allegation where the supplied photographs didn't clearly establish that the stop line was crossed?
  5. Would you recommend requesting the full photographic/video evidence before deciding how to proceed?

The Police don't have to provide the evidence before court.

They believe they have enough for a conviction so it is up to you whether to defend it in court or accept the FPN/educational course, if offered, after you confirm who was driving.

Personally, I would remember if I had went through a red light less than 2 weeks ago. Did you? Or are younlooking for a technicality to get out of it. If so, you are taking a gamble, as stated above.

  • Thanks, I understand that the police are not obliged to provide full evidence before court and that identifying the driver is a separate legal requirement.

My point is simply that, based on the photographic evidence supplied at this stage, I personally cannot see that it clearly establishes that my vehicle crossed the white stop line while the signal was red. The images show my blue car, but the stop line itself and my vehicle’s position relative to it are not clear to me, particularly with the white van also present in the scene.

  • As far as i see i dont remember crossing the red light

So did you do it or didn't you? Confirm who the driver was and then wait to see what happens.

Clearly a single static picture cant indicate at what time the vehicle crossed the line only if it was or wasnt across the line at the moment the image was taken.

Its difficult to see with absolute certainty if the blue car is over the line, Id argue it looks more likely that it is than it isnt but wouldnt want to bet any significant money on it. If it was crossed when the light was green and you stayed there after it turned red or crossed after the ight turned obviously cant say per the above

  • @MyRealNameToo Red car or blue?

The police will not have a video, the still image will have been triggered as soon as the front of your car crossed the stop line even if that was by a 1cm and you proceeded no further you will still have commited the offence. You would have to prove the system was defective to get off which is very difficult and risky. White van man may get his own NIP if he also crossed on red.

How long had the light been red according to the NIP?
