I think the OP will have to bear the cost or replacing the the lead pipe.

The lead pipe in the photo is very near electric cables and the pipe/tap don't look in great condition either.

it’s an earth wire and I have no idea what it’s for.

I have messaged the guy who gave that quote for £460 and he was ok about it. This is his reply back.

The stop tap isn’t a like for like replacement as it’s on lead pipework. You’ve also got a shared external stop tap which is more work making sure other properties waters are back on ok. I’ve had to allow for 2 blokes on my quote. I understand if the quote is not what you expected. Also completely understand if you wanna gather some more quotes. I’ve done these types of jobs before and there not straightforward. You’ve also got your fill valve to replace upstairs too.

I have been on checkatrade and some else quoted £180 from photos. That also included replacing the kitchen tap which is leaking.

Severn Trent are supposed to be coming out to establish where the stop tap is and how many houses it is connected to.

sorry to hijack but it's good to know that ours isn't the only house without a stop tap. May I ask where you had yours fitted? I know many are in the kitchen but I don't think that's the first place our pipes go to - likely the bathroom is first. Presumably a plumber will know?

All metal pipes need to be earthed to minimise electricution I believe.

The electric cable I was on about was to the left of the valve as it seems quite close.

A plumber wont just know, they will investigate and find out where the water first comes into the property, unless they have done the same work for a neighbour who has the identical property. How easy it is to investigate will depend on how much pipework is boxed in etc.

In my childhood home it was in the dining room but thats because the dining room used to be the kitchen until an extension was put on and the room moved.

plumber should know but it should be near where the mains water enters your house which is underneath my kitchen sink. Unless you live in a flat i doubt its the bathroom

I thought it might be the bathroom as the water meter is in the middle of lane next to us and is closer to the bathroom than the kitchen. But I'll have a nosey outside to see if there's any obvious clues.
