When can an "EX BT" customer become a "NEW" EE customer.

My BT internet 500 contract at £49 a month finishes on 16th September. It included landline and extender disks, both of which I no longer require as I have moved 100% mobile for phone and installed a Mesh system. I have a preference for staying in the BT/EE/Plusnet environment but in the interests of saving money I want to use a comparison site offer to order EE.

I intend to give BT the statutory 30 days notice and my service will terminate on 15th September. Would anyone know how soon after that I will identify as a new customer with EE? Currently if I try to do a switch procedure I am recognised as BT and not permitted to use the switch procedure.

I'll be interested in this too. My BT internet contract doesn't run out until October but they are ringing me every couple of weeks now to try and get me into a new contract. Or at least they are claiming it is BT anyway. I said I wouldn't talk to them until I'd looked at other providers to compare. I am currently paying £40.99 for 500mb but now having looked other providers are significantly cheaper so that will be my starting point. My neighbour was also with BT and renegotiated her contract and part of the deal was actually swapping to EE but there was no need to swap any of her equipment. BT has been very reliable so I'm not keen to change but I will need a better deal and EE are offering £24.99 for 500mb so that will be my starting point

Are you using a comparison site with a cashback deal or just a standard tariff at £xx?

It will be worth phoning EE to see if they can match the deal and switch internally. I am with Plusnet
and they have always been good at matching deals. They do not seem to quibble when shown
sensible deals and not ones with strange cashback terms.

Noticed EE were very competitive with the faster full fibre deals. I needed to upgrade my network
first.

Downtime only seems to happen early hours of the morning. Rarely get downtime during the daytime.

I recently switched from BT to Plusnet and used Topcashback to get both a £135 payment card from Plusnet (which came through very quickly) and I have cashback pending payment as well. Cost of my broadband was significantly lower and I got a higher connection rate.

BT phoned to try and keep my business but didn't push it given that I was staying within the group.

I didn't give BT any notice, I just initiated the switch the day after my contract term had ended.

I can answer this because I'm basically in this position in a roundabout way.

You can become a new EE customer immediately. They're different companies.

However you need to wait 3 months (after leaving) before being seen as a 'new' BT customer once again.

Source: I've literally just been on the phone to BT (yet got connected to EE) and asked this very question. The person on the phone needed to consult with their manager.
