That can already be the case anyway, that couples can say they've split up and living as separate entities within the same house, and therefore qualify for benefits as a separated couple would. Perhaps it would be looked into in more depth if you lived like that for a significant length of time, but I know when me and my ex split, it took him a while to find a place, and we were amicable enough and had kids together so made sense for him to move into the spare room until he found somewhere. I had assumed we would have to continue our tax credits claim as a couple until he moved out, but when I informed them, they said that so long as we had separate finances etc, and were living as separate individuals, we could claim individually, and they needed no further questions or evidence etc.

The LL is happy with their tenant doing this on a RaR basis as they know each other well. The tenant is starting off their career in the NHS, and the LL is happy with this arrangement as the house is large enough and has a second bedroom.
