I was hospitalised in Tenerife twice in 11 months, for 14 nights and 10 nights. I was flown home with oxygen and a medical escort the first time and had an ambulance waiting to take me from EDI airport to hospital in Aberdeen. I dread to think how much it cost each time.

When we needed medical help in Spain on both occasions used the Spanish NHS via the European health card and got same cover as a Spanish person would more or less same as the UK NHS. This was pre Corvid.
I believe at that time our Policy required us to use the EU card first and when we did they did not charge the Excess.
We got first rate attention in the Spanish NHS seen immediately for documentation and given treatment straight away.
So shocked to read about cover for Spain hard to get a few years later.

@NoodleDoodleMan Thanks for finding that explanation. I do wonder how many people have bought policies which don't cover Spain, Cyprus or Malta without realising. This just helps emphasise the importance of reading policy details carefully before purchasing.

The options are given right at the beginning of getting a quote and are very clear. They are: Europe excluding Spain, etc, Europe including Spain, etc, Worldwide excluding the USA and Caribbean and Worldwide including the USA and the Caribbean.

There will always be some, after all the OP seems to think their European cover will include a trip to the USA but I suspect the risks are more that people forget what they have bought and what it does and doesnt cover. All sites I've ever seen were very clear on the territorial limits though I have seen a couple that you need a basic understanding of geography as know of one person who bought a world wide excluding north america cover and then went to Mexico and got unstuck as they thought N.America was just USA and Canada and that Mexico was in South America "because they speak spanish" (didnt seen to know Central America existed at all)
