Based on the explanation on their website, I think it would be very rash to assume that a joint account would only be restricted for one of the account holders, although we don't know exactly what the communications said.

OP doesn't mention her husband having to complete ID checks though…

No it’s our only bank account

So what convinces you that restrictions would be 'no problem' because your husband is with you - did they specifically state that any restrictions would only apply to you individually rather than to the account?

It is always risky to rely on a single source of funds as something could always happen to your access to this source, whether caused by yourself or someone/something else. Doubly so if two people rely on the same source.

You should, at your earliest opportunity, reduce this risk, e.g.having another joint account with a different bank, having sole accounts with one or more different banks, having credit cards, having cash etc

In the meantime, pop into a Santander branch, or call them, to prevent a block on your account until you can provide the required ID.

ok. Phoned Santander. They have escalated and are sending forms out for me to do it the old fashioned way. The only restriction applied is my access to online banking. Husband can use as normal. I can still use it as a linked account and any payments to me and my debit card will continue as normal. Once they receive the paperwork back the restrictions will be lifted

Reassuring that they've clarified only very limited restrictions, but what does 'doing it the old fashioned way' actually entail?
