Yeyy back to the error at hand.

ok...how do I stop it searching my machine? As all I am doing is clicking a link and it starts loading that site and I am then taken to the google image search page.

I think vista is better as in style, but as a whole it depends how you use the computer to be honest.
As the computer wil be used mainly for gaming, xp would probably suit me better as I enjoy the old games.

    Why?

I still have a DOS game that I play on Vista all the way through to new release games, and it handles them all fine.

Alot of people knock Vista but I've played old games on it without problems. Have you tried the games you want under Vista?

Ive been having problems putting windows games on, such as theme hospital, red alert 2, as the computer just goes all slow and cant read the disk.

Try going to the internet options & the programs tab. There should be a reset to defaults button. This should reset search as well.

Sounds to me like you have more fundamental problems. I'd expect the games to give an error when installing or trying to run them rather than problems reading the discs. I may try installing Red Alert 2 on my Vista machine tonight and see how it goes.

Have you tried scanning for Malware?

What spec is your machine and did it come with Vista pre-installed?

That sounds like some sort of conflict with the copy protection on the discs more than a problem caused by Vista specifically.

You could try copying the entire cd to your harddrive install from there then use a no-cd crack (totally legal if you OWN a copy of the game).

Umm had a look but couldnt find the 'reset to defaults button', theres a set internet explorer as default, that is set, so had a look at the 'set programs' bit and that seemed ok.

Computer is emachine E4264, intel core 2 duo E4500, Nvidia 128 graphics, 1GB DDR2 ram.

how do i search for malware? as i dont think i have any prgrams that search for that. Would probably come in handy as I am having problems getting Zonealarm firewall to work.

256mb min for vista graphics & 2 gig ram to have a hope of vista running as it should.

back to the original prob - there must be something in internet explorer 7 that lets you change the default search. It certainly needs checking..
