Understanding the MSE cheap energy club results

Long time lurker but new member here. Used the MSE search along with others in the past but this mornings check confuses me. We're on a BG tariff ending 30/09/2027 so I've put my actual kWh usage over the previous 12 months.

It says I'm currently paying £1234 PA (the actual is/was £1526). It says my new bill with BG will be £1350 whereas the BG site says £1840. (There is a £234 credit currently - is this likely to be the reason the figures are out?)

Currently on The Longer Fix v11 and the new deal offered is -Cap Tracker Plus Sep27 v1

Big discrepancies here, so can I trust the list it gives me as possible alternatives as they're all much lower than actual results too, or am I simply making schoolboy errors?

    Welcome to the forum!

It says I'm currently paying £1234 PA (the actual is/was £1526).

If you can share your current tariff rates, and your actual kWh, we can check these figures quite easily.

It says my new bill with BG will be £1350 whereas the BG site says £1840.

Similarly, if you can share details of BG's offered tariff we can check these numbers for you.

(Tariff rates vary by region and payment type, so even though you'e shared the names of the tariffs I can't easily look up the rates for your particular case on BG's site.)

  • Thanks QrizB.

Gas is 5.66p per kWh, actual annual usage 7,820. (Standing charge 31.12p/day)

Electric is 21.549p, actual annual usage 3826.1. (Standing charge 54.323p/day)

    New offer is;

Gas - 7.27 per kWh (standing charge 20.83p/day).

Electric - 25.33p per kWh (Standing charge 51.48p/day)

    HOWEVER!!

I'd input the gas usage into the MSE energy club as 782 in error - instead of 7820, when I read the monthly reading and totalled it up.

The current and predicted figures now read much more like I would expect.

Best fix is going to be FUSE at an extra £52 a year whilst the BG tracker is only £126 more. Just need to guess if the current POTUS is likely to calm down in the Middle East and a tracker would be better! Got a crystal ball by any chance?

I know you've spotted your error but thought I'd do the calculations anyway 🙂

Gas is 5.66p per kWh, actual annual usage 7,820. (Standing charge 31.12p/day)

    5.66p x 7820 + 31.12p x 365 = £556.20

Electric is 21.549p, actual annual usage 3826.1. (Standing charge 54.323p/day)

    21.549p x 3826.1 + 54.323p x 365 = £1022.77

Total on your current deal = £1578.97

Gas - 7.27 per kWh (standing charge 20.83p/day)

    7.27p x 7820 + 20.83p x 365 = £644.54

Electric - 25.33p per kWh (Standing charge 51.48p/day)

    25.33p x 3826.1 + 51.48p x 365 = £1157.05

Total on the new offer = £1801.59

Best fix is going to be FUSE at an extra £52 a year whilst the BG tracker is only £126 more.

FUSE seem to be coming out cheapest for lots of folk at present.

Any thoughts on Fuse? I'm not near the end of my contract yet, but I did a comparison and Fuse also came out cheapest for me.

    Any thoughts on Fuse?

I'm not really the right person to ask but there's a 12-page thread with several customers and not many problems reported, you could take a look over there 🙂

  • Thanks again QrizB, appreciate the help, I’ll run it passed SWMBO and see her thoughts.

I’m inclined to stick with BG and hope things improve so the tracker will give us something back.
