Washer dryer advice

We bought a 2k LG washer dryer - because it came some fancy features and a heat pump in it which in theory would pay for itself. Dreadful mistake.
Heat pump was completely fine, but spending so much on a washer dryer is a terrible idea, because LG design their washing machines to fail and fail fast - even the expensive ones - we had an issue where the seal was loose enough that a sock could easily get in there and block the whole drain. Happened 4 times - fortunately still inside warranty - before we went to seller and asked for money back based on it not lasting a reasonable amount of time for the price.A lot of modern washer dryers don't last as long as they easily could if manufacturers weren't cheaping out and planning them to fail.
We replaced it with a non heat pump one from Bosch and its been completely fine. Bosch, Siemens (which is same company as Bosch), Miele are really the only companies I would buy a new washer dryer from if I wanted it to outlast the warranty period.
If you have only a short term need for it, it would be cheaper (albeit probably wasteful) to get a cheaper 2 or 3 year warranty one instead.0 -
thanks very useful, what sort of cost was your Bosch?
I almost bought a Bosch last night until I saw that it’s made in china, I thought the higher end brands hadn’t completely cheaped out, but clearly have. Not sure where to go now!

Not really sure the relevance of where something was made? You can get junk made in Germany as well as exceptionally well made stuff coming out of China.
Who makes it is also broadly irrelevant, many factories are able to output different levels of quality, just because two brands come out of the same building doesnt make them the same quality. Take Eclat Textiles, they make Lululemon leggings retailing at £90 and Walmart synthetic leggings retailing at £7.50 - not going to comment on the price difference is worth it or not but no one is not going to be able to tell the difference between the two.
Similarly no one is going to think their VW Polo is equivalent to a Lamborghini despite both being part of the VW group.
The reality has always being diminishing returns, paying 10x the price for a Miele top tier machine is never going to give 10x the cleaning performance however it is likely to give a host of convenience features and how much you value these will vary significantly. Personally I like that our dishwasher pings me to tell me its out of salt or rinse aid as its certainly not something we regularly check and its more reliable then have a few poor washes and then ahving to try and workout why.

We bought Miele from Miele outlet 5 years ago or so. It has been previously used in a showroom I believe for demonstrations only. Didn't have a single issue with it. Still perfect.

Hotpoint, zanuzzi awful in my experience.
There's some company called "electriQ" who seem to be just sticking their logo on cheap Chinese household appliances. Id avoid them too.
I try to buy a washer/ dryer that can cope with say 10kg but never go above 7kg and never use the washer on the highest spin.
Make sure you can access the filters to clean them.
New Bosch is super quiet and filter is at the front

In any case the largest load weight usually only applies to a couple of the programmes. For most programmes a lower weight is recommended. So the headline largest load figure is maybe not as important as it sounds.
