Update: They are refusing to hand over the Document Reference Number for me to check it's legit with the DVLA. It's a simple process that doesn't present a security risk and many reputable dealers would be happy to do this - but it's not their company policy apparently.

They'll only hand this key bit of information out after I have handed over my hard earned cash and signed on the dotted line.

It's my policy to trust my gut, so I'm off.

I wouldn't call it a doom and gloom scenario, I'd call it a very sensible approach. If it's so easy to sort out why haven't the garage done it themselves. V5C new keeper slip is almost certainly invalid, I suspect someone has bought a car, never registered it to themselves and passed it on without doing so. Old keeper would have done notification of sale so the V5C green slip number associated with it is then cancelled. You've got no idea how many hands it's been through since that slip was handed over.

Any dealership that is selling cars without a current V5C is, shall we say, not very mainstream and unlikely to deal with any issues that arise.

Remember the saying: if it looks too good to be true it almost certainly is.

    Too dodgy.

    Too risky.

    Walk away.

    You don't need the hassle.

New poster, two posts on the same thread necromancy topic… and one of them includes a URL that links to a scam site. There's the payoff…

They can't even fill in a MSE post correctly so I wouldn't hold out much hope for V5s.
