Poorly worded, or perhaps C&P has missed some context but my take:

Full Time staff get 22 days Annual Leave + (8 days) BH ie 30 in total.

How many hours do FT staff work? If they do a 40 hour week then you shold get

    20 (your weekly work hours) / 40 (FT work hours) = 0.5 x FT holiday allowance = 15 days

depending on if you work fewer full days to make up your hours or 5 shorter days/week can mean its easier to manage your leave allowance & use by converting it into hours

Are you in Scotland or NI? They both appear to have 10 bank hols this year. So that would make sense.

    22 days leave at 20 hours gives 22*20/5 = 88 hours

    Bank hols 10*20/5 = 40 hours

    Total 128 hours.

Then you'll need to see what bank hols fall on your working days, and assuming you don't work them, you'd need to deduct the hours you'd normally work on those days

ETA: Sorry just seen your screenshot - presume ENG in England - but your leave year is Apr-Mar and there are 2 Easters in that period as it was late this year and is early next year, so 10 bank hols in that period Apr 26 to Mar 27 in England.

So add up the hours you work on those 10 bank hols, there's 6 Mondays and 4 Fridays. Is that 80 hours? If so it's a bit unfortunate in that you only get 2.4 weeks you're able to book on top of the bank hols. Your colleagues who don't work Mon/Fri will get the same total time off but they'll get more choice when they take them, they could end up with 6.4 weeks leave they can take when they want if they work Tue-Thu.

    Thank you.

Is this normal, for bank holidays to be included in entitlement?

I'm 50 this year but this is only my 3rd job. 1st was in a school which was term time and just got paid the hours worked.

Then it was NHS and got the Bank Holidays off but paid for - not using my holiday allowance. I do know my colleague who didn't work Mondays got the bank holidays as extra holiday on top of her entitlement.

I will be looking for a new job. I can't work as it is.

    Thank you.

Yes it's usual for part timers. It works the same for me as I'm part time, but the big difference is I don't have to use any of my leave on bank holidays if I don't want to, I can either work the bank holiday, or I can shift the hours to later in the week so I'm still doing my full weekly hours, and then I don't have to book any leave plus can use the bank holiday element of leave on other days.

Is this possible at your place? Maybe something to have a word with your boss about. Often you can't work the bank hols because the place is closed, and it's reasonable to expect you to use bank hol leave against the bank hols, but I'd have thought any reasonable employer would at least consider allowing you to shift working hours so that you aren't forced to use normal leave on bank hols.

Eg if you work 8 hours on a Mon and there's a bank hol that Mon, use 4 hours bank hol leave for the bank hol and work the other 4 hours say on Tues.

    what are full time hours for the role ? 35 ? 37.5 ? 40 ?

what is the basis in hours of the normal working day for a full timer i.e. 37.5 /5 = 7.5

do you work a reduced number of full days each week or the full number of days at reduced hours ?

    Something like this?

If you work 3/5 of a week then your annual holidays would be

    3/5 x 22=13.2 days

    13.2 x 8 =105.6 plus bank holiday hours.

    If 3/5 of 80 = 48

105+ 48=153 days less 80 for covering bank holidays

  • This means your employer gives you 22 days holiday on top of bank holidays — so you actually get more than the legal minimum. The 'not inclusive' wording is the good part! As a part-time worker on 20 hours, your bank holiday entitlement is calculated pro-rata. So if a full-timer gets 8 bank holidays, you would get a proportion based on your hours. ACAS has really clear guidance on this if you need the exact calculation.

Yes but it's pretty rubbish in OP's case as she is forced to take all bank hols off and appears to work 8 hours Mon/Fri when all the bank hols fall, meaning she only gets 2.4 weeks off in addition to the bank hols.

But she works 3/5 of a week and gets 3/5 of annual leave and 3/5 of bank holidays off hours.

Extra hours need to come from annual leave or unpaid.

Well obviously, as already discussed. It's not about the amount of time off but having to use a day's leave on top of a day's bhol allocation for every bank hol without it seems any choice in the matter. So she can only get 2 entire weeks leave in the whole year. Pretty rubbish if she likes getting away on holiday.
