CARER ELEMENT, UC AND WORKING PART TIME AS A FILM EXTRA

Good Morning to all. Can someone help please.

I am a full time carer and I get a Carer Element with my Universal Credit…each month.I am also a Film Extra as self employed as this work is occasional…

I understand as I am getting the carer's element …there is NO earning limits.

First Question ::…what exactly does that mean ?

Does this mean I can earn any amount and my monthly UC amount as a single person will NOT be reduced ???

Second Question:: Am I classed as self employed ? and if yes…Must I fill a self employed tax return yearly ??

Third Question:: Must I inform UC about this part time job as film extra in my UC Journal ???

Fourth Question My yearly income from film extra roughly always less than £ 9500 a year.

after expenses.

Will this reduce my monthly UC?

Lastly………………How much can I earn before my UC is reduced as I am on carer's element?

1, Carers allowance, a separate benefit from UC has a maximum amount that can be earned each week before the benefit is lost. Carers element is not a separate benefit, it's part of UC and your maximum UC award has it's own means test based upon your circumstances.

    2. Possibly, what does the company that pays you say you are, an employee, contractor etc. If HMRC determine that you need to then yes.

    3. Yes, for any non-PAYE income such as this you need to declare it to DWP in each assessment period, you should have been doing this already for all income you have received from this job, if you haven't been doing so it's possible you have been overpaid.

    4. This income may reduce your UC award however you've not supplied enough information to know for sure or calculate it. UC awards are person specific and entirely dependant upon a claimants circumstances.

Just because you are treated as carer by UC, does not mean you cannot work. You can work as many hours as you want, provided you can still care for at least 35 hours per week.

You need to report change on claim under work and earnings to advise self employed. And then you will need to attend Job Centre appointment where they will explain income reporting. You will have to report self employed income and expenses at the end of every UC assessment period.

The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

Maybe start here, I would also suggest you read your claimant commitment, the one you said you had read and agreed to when you started your UC claim.

We all read your post correctly.

Yes you can work, as many hours as you wish and earn a much as you wish as long as you continue to provide care for at least 35 hours per week. But, you need to inform UC of both your self employment and how much you earn through this work in each assessment period through your journal.

You should have done this, like you agreed to do so in your claimant commitment, as soon as you began your work as an film extra.

There is no magic figure you can earn before it affects how much you receive in UC. It is a means tested benefit and the amount you receive depends totally upon your circumstances, things like do you own your home or do you rent and receive a housing element, do you have children, how much you earn each assessment period plus a lot more infomation.

Wonderful and thank you very much for your help.

Now I give more info as follows.

I live alone over 40 No housing problems…Very simple. working on odd days when I get film extras jobs.

not permanent at all Maybe nothing for days and weeks and suddenly my agent calls and I go for audition and lucky and i am chosen etc. for few days or so

so most of the time I am free and I am also caring for someone and getting Carers Element with my UC

My question is how much can I earn and my UC amount is not affected.

You see..I can work this week for 3 days but I get paid two months later.

The agent his commission and give me a cheque for the rest

If I work this week You mean I should put this in my journal even though I did not get paid yet ?????

Have you registered with HMRC as self employed?

You need to registered by 5 October in the second year of your self employment.

You can register at any time before then but you will receive a penalty if after that date.

You can check how much your income will affect your UC by using this benefit calculator.
