All dealer would need is retention certificate, not V5 if it is going straight on a new car.
I prefer to have a normal plate on 1st, then when it comes to change car, you already have plates to go on. Rather than then going to get some made up, so you can drive car.

The dealer allocated a number to the car from his range of new numbers available but never physically put the plates on the car.
He gave us the plates so we had them when required.
