I've sent the electoral register forms off today. I should've sorted it before I applied for my credit report from Experian, but it didn't even enter my mind as the reason they were asking for my passport!

Please note: the period before new entries/amendments are added to the electoral roll varies during the calendar year. It's possible to enrol each month from early December until mid-August, using the rolling register procedure. Unfortunately, there's a blind spot from mid-August till mid-October. This is because borough-wide audits are undertaken annually in August and the register is updated in October. Additions made now will not appear until 1 December 2008.
As I'm already signed up and they have all my details, I'm guessing I cannot register again for the free trial? At the moment, I can sign into my account but all that appears is a message asking me to send the appropriate documents. I cannot access any of the features. So, I've sent off my passport for the time being and we'll see what happens now.

Don't forget this info's available for £2 per paper copy too.(For details, see the *How to obtain credit reports* sticky.)

Once you have your hard copy, the CRAs seem happy to answer questions over the phone if you quote your reference number. So if, for instance, you wanted to check that your electoral status had been updated, there's no need to order further copies of your credit reports ;)

• Further to my original post about applying for the BarclayCard OnePulse from the MSE recommendation.......
This matches my experience. I've applied on line three times - no record of my application when i call up and no other communications from them.

Has anyone successfully applied for the Barclaycard OnePulse deal recently? If not then surely this shouldn't be the recommended deal.

..... I have now received an email telling me my application was successful and have now received the card yesterday. This is despite no record of my two online attempts for application, and a 'cancelled' status that couldn't be undone from applying by phone when the phoneline cut-out.:rotfl:

AND.......credit crunch credit smunch
I was a little dissapointed when my diversion to tescos just got my £3700 credit limit. But now barclaycard has got a £7000 limit???!!!!!???! These ccard companies are still throwing credit around despite the environment and news. I'm not that good a bet....!

Luckily I'm also quite determined to manage my debt.
Current position now:
Virgin MBNA (end of 14mnth 0% BT deal) : £0 - will cancel soon probaly.
HSBC Gold (standard with my curr a/c) : £0 - will keep one of these two for spending short term before something goes to BT.
Tescos (14 mnt 0% BT deal) : £3500 (near limit)
Barclaycard Onepulse (14 mnth 0% BT deal ) : £560

Planning to pay off the above two cards total £150 p month for a circa 2 year pay off (including some lump sum repayments along the way EG work bonus etc).

(BTW - also have A&L fixed rate loan of around £10,000 for 5 years paying off at £230 per month) direction taken from MSE a while ago. Have currently got repayment protection from Antinsure (sp?) for £1,500 pmonth cover for £20 per month. Might up this a bit.

Cheers all -

MSE admin - Recommend reconsidering Barclaycard as the recommendation. Tescos seems equivalent and much better application process.

• Hi all

I was hoping that someone could help me.

Here's the situation:

I have a big tax bill coming soon and quite simply don't have the cash to hand to pay it as I am self employed and my business has reduced somewhat recently.

However I do have a credit card with the apprx 5k available on it. Thr problem is you can't pay a tax bill with a crdit card.

So what I'm thinking is this:
I take out the 5k in the form of cash, pay my tax bill with this and then transfer my new 5k balance (which I will be paying the higher rate on as it is cash not purchases) onto a new card with 0% on balance transfers.

Can I do this? Will a new credit card allow me to transfer a big balance that was for cash withdrawals and not purchases?

Because it seems to me I am then getting an interest free for 12 months loan. Is this right?

Any comments would be welcomed.

Thanks in advance.

An interesting way of looking at it.
Firstly, there is nothing to stop you from doing this. Your first card won't mind as it is being paid off. The second card won't mind - they don't care where the money goes.
In fact, then, it would be better to do the balance transfer _before_ you withdraw the cash, giving yourself a positive balance on your original credit card which you could then withdraw in cash.

However, it won't really be an interest free loan, as you will pay 3% balance transfer fee plus whatever cash handling fee you get charged (2.5%?) to withdraw the cash. (Plus, if you did it your way, interest on the cash withdrawal until the transfer came through.)

However, there is a better way to do it.
Some cards, for example those in the MBNA family (such as Virgin) and Egg, allow you to do a balance transfer straight into your current account. Thus cutting out the need for the cash withdrawal and the 2.5% handling fee.
• Hi there
I can't decide what to do for the best & would welcome some opinions!

I currently have £10400 on a 0% deal ending April 09 with MBNA

(This came from a transfer of £7000 from my Abbey card when my 0% rate there ended, plus £4000 from my Barclaycard - I had been paying interest in the 20%s on that)

I also have £3000 on a new HSBC card at 0% until Oct 09 - (this also came from my Barclaycard balance)

Both these transfers were only made in Aug this year so I have just recently paid £430 in BT fees. ( & my plan is to pay off my debts rather than just service them)

So I have the following -
MBNA £10400 (limit £15000)
HSBC £3000 (limit 3500)
Abbey - 0 (limit 10000)
Barclaycard - 0 (limit 5000)

I had the credit check in Aug for HSBC plus I also applied for a loan with Nationwide for £12000 (accepted but then but I decided against
consolidation). So 2 credit checks recently.

I should get the MBNA balance down to £8000 by April (& HSBC to £2500 but I'm not worrying about that one yet)

In April 09 my MBNA shoots up to 28% ( or something similar).

I originally had planned on asking Barclaycard to take £5000 on their 6.9% life of balance offer & then it gets a bit hazy about the other £3000 - perhaps I'll get another 0% card if I'm lucky? (Mint? Egg?)

Now, already Barclaycard are offering me a BT back at 0% until Oct 09. But it's another fee to pay & will lose me the option of transferring onto a LofB rate in april. And in Oct next year all my offers will run out at the same time with me still owing about £7000 overall.

I think I should take the 0% offer up with Bcard - swallow the other fee - & hope I can get another offer in a year's time. Bird in the hand is worth 2 in the bush right?

Aargh - but my available credit is so high! - if I close the Abbey it'll look better on my credit file next Oct but I'll miss out on them trying to entice me back.

Y'know it was cathartic just writing that out - It's going round & round in my
head - I expect it's 6 of one & half a dozen of the other. I really don't mind if noone replies - thanks for reading!

Hi,

New to all this balance transfer business. I am in the process of getting an offset mortgage and I am looking to get the 0% for 16months virgin credit card to reduce the interest on the mortgage. Here are a few question I'm not too sure about:

1, How do I transfer the money from the credit card into my account?

2, Do I still have to pay the mimimum monthly payments or do I just pay back the lump sum at the end of the 16 months?

3, What limit will Virgin put on the card for me? if its low can I request for this to be upped?

Thanks for ur help much appreciated.
• Hi,

I have a halifax card with 0% ending in January and also another Tesco card with a balance on it that i would to combine.

My husband earns 3 times as much as I do but currently has no cards so would hopefully get a credit limit to cover both.

If he applies for a 0% deal and is accepted can we BT my balances onto his card?
Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended :p
1, How do I transfer the money from the credit card into my account?
Just ask them to do a Super Balance Transfer
2, Do I still have to pay the mimimum monthly payments or do I just pay back the lump sum at the end of the 16 months?
Yes but they will be very low monthly payments
3, What limit will Virgin put on the card for me? if its low can I request for this to be upped?
They are usually generous with their limits if you have any other MBNA cards you can transfer the limits over to the new one and just keep a small limit to keep the card open.

You can always ask but probably wouldn't increase it straight away:D

Best wishes
