Well I ended up ringing Virgin for them to tell me my application has been declined so not quite sure what I'm going to do now. I'm quietly panicing.
That is a shame, but don't panic.
You are not really in any worse state than you were previously.

Do what you can to try to get your overdraft down.
Check your credit reports before you apply for any more credit.

Look at other areas of this site for other places you can save money. That money will help with your overdraft.
  • Decided maybe getting a new credit card isn't the best plan anyway. So paid off my overdraft with money from my caravan account so that is gone. Just need to pay as much as possible each month on the current card and don't add anymore.
    Thanks everyone.

My credit rating needs attention rather than being overly bad. I have no CCJs or bankruptcy etc. My student debt was 4 years ago. It was an overdraft with the Halifax. This has now been settled in full, but only within the last few months. For the past 4 years I've taken out no loans ... The only credit agreements I have are with catalogues, which I always pay in full or on time.

Congratulations on clearing your Halifax debt.

Have you considered Mint? (Introductory 0% fixed until 1 November 2009 on balance transfers and for special offer BTs debited to the account during January 2010, 0% fixed until 1 July 2010. There's a 3% handling charge.)

For tips to improve your chances of acceptance, have a look at the *Credit Rating* articles on the main site as suggested in #1141 above, to make sure no other factors are working against you.

Meanwhile, I would concentrate on paying as much as possible off your Virgin card each month. Clearing this debt ASAP will reduce the interest you pay and you'll be building a better credit history in the process.

Thanks Moggles - I'll take a look at the Mint card, sounds good! Let's just hope I get accepted!

I've had a look at Martin's "Credit Rating" Articles, apart from changing jobs last year and becoming Self Employed there is no other reasons I should have a bad credit score. Its always been the Halfax Debt that has stopped me getting credit in the past.

    Thanks for your advice

Nice one, Briggsy. I think you've done the sensible thing.
You can now build your "caravan account" back up when funds allow...
  • I already have the caravan. The account is the one I pay money into from guests, etc and then use it to pay the bills. Figured it would be better paying of the overdraft in full and then the credit card.

Anyway I'm sorry that this doesn't fit with the topic in hand.
