Signal strength

One obvious test is to swap the SIMs on your two phones - if your OH gets a decent O2 signal and you get crappy EE then your phone's a clunker.
EDIT, only works with physical SIMs, otherwise you've just found a downside to eSIMs.

Thanks, I'm something of a technophobe. Just tried that though, got full signal with EE & he got a rubbish one with 02! Time to switch.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.1 -
Update on that...after 4 days in aberystwyth and elan Valley areas I couldn't find anywhere where I wasn't getting a good vodafone signal so no chance to try connecting to 3. Sometimes they were the only two networks but always both on offer.

I live within 200m of 3 mast (can see it as I write this). Up until recently outstanding service, but since merger, signal drops 20+ times a day.
Three blames insufficient masts in my area but wondering if it is result of new Vodafone traffic.

It's more likely to be new Vodafone traffic.
They're not sharing all masts here, yet, but on what they are sharing speeds have collapsed - e.g. One of the 5G masts here when handling Three only; 1Gbps download (easily) and 100Mbps upload. Now, with Vodafone traffic too, on the same mast; 400Mbps download (at best) and 40Mbps upload.
All being well, when they're both sharing on all of each other's masts, performance should even out.
