Tyre / wheel issue
Hi all, my MOT is due in a few months and this is the current condition of my front left wheel and tyre (small cut). It looks like it needs addressing sooner than that. But what would cause the scrapes across the wheel - mounting kerbs? This is the only wheel and tyre like this. Thanks.

Front Left? That's the 'parking wheel', the one you run along the kerb so that you know you're close enough.
That's why my alloys look like that.
Not sure I'd describe that as a "small cut", more like "chunk missing".

The smallest cut is an MOT fail the larger one is likely to get you a dangerous do not drive failure.

That tyre should be replaced ASAP, not In a few months just for the MOT.
To get that sort of damage to both the tyre and wheel, it is possibly regularly parked against a high kerbstone?

Looking at that wheel & tyre, I would purchase a funeral plan & start to believe in god.
Then hope I do not need either.
I would replace the tyre with the cheapest tyre possible. Due to repeated damage on that wheel.

The tyre looks like pothole damage, unless you like bumping up and down flights of steps in an Italian Job style.
It's knackered and needs replacing ASAP. Ideally your next use of the car will be to drive to a local tyre fitter, slowly and carefully.
Agree that the wheel damage probably comes from getting too friendly with kerbstones.

It's 11 years old and possibly been run flat at some point too. I'd be checking the others
Also check if it's just the black plastic cap ill fitting on that one wheel stud. Could be a loose stud.
Might want to check the discs and pads too, although I guess you just washed it.

Nice spot. If it is the front as assumed, then I'd certainly be looking at replacing the other side at the same time, if it is the same age.
Usually preferable to have a matching pair on the same "axle".

Really?
If you need to ask I do worry about you possessing the necessary competence to drive a vehicle safely.
Primarily the amount of damage to the wheel indicates that you really do not know where the vehicle is pointing.
Secondly the fact that you cannot recognise that you need to get the tyre changed before it blows out, potentially leading to loss of control, a collision with other vehicles and serious injury or death. Yours or other road users is deeply worrying.
It also looks to be quite worn and from what I can m make out, the date code indicates it might be over 10 years old. Change it immediately, it best monopoly fashion do not pass go, go straight to a tyre fitter and change the tyre.
Is the offside similarly worn and old? Spend £120 and consider the benefit.
People may consider that to be harsh but it is the reality of the risk the driver is unwittingly carrying and we should not be afraid to call that behaviour out, before people's lives; mine, my family's are your families are jeopardised.

Much safer to get a tyre fitter to come to you. Would mean you wouldn't drive it until the tyre was changed, and that might save your life, and other people's as well.
