Ryanair flight delayed 2+ hours - compensation ?
our flight from Stansted to Carcassonne on 1 July was delayed 2.5 hours, their website says no compensation as under 3 hours but the distance was well under 1500km…
getting mixed up on the wording of the regs. Any help very welcome

Compensation only kicks in if the arrival time was delayed by at least three hours (and for reasons within the airline's control) - the distance banding just relates to the amount of compensation.

What was the reason for the delay?
Compensation is only due if it was for a reason within your airlines control, ie not weather, industrial action, air traffic control related etc.

Just as an amusing/interesting aside, I suspect that staff are 'encouraged' to cite reasons beyond the airline's control.
We were on an easyjet flight to Dalaman last month. A group of us were held at the gate and the explanation given there was that the plane couldn't take off as they were a crew member down. Sure enough, 10 minutes later a very embarrassed looking member of the cabin crew came running up to the gate and dashed onto the plane.
We then completed boarding but missed our slot and left over an hour late. The announcement on the plane was 'bad weather over Europe'. I wish they'd been honest.
No compensation due, of course, but a whole plane load of passengers inconvenienced because someone was late for work.

But, as above, it doesn't matter what the reason was, if the delay was less than three hours…

Who says they were being dishonest? The ATC slot may well have been due to bad weather on Europe?
How do you know the cabin crew was late for work?

Did you consider that the “very embarrassed looking member of the cabin crew came running up to the gate and dashed onto the plane” was actually a crew member called off Home standby or Airport standby to replace an original crew member (perhaps delayed due to an accident or road traffic). That standby replacement crew members might have “came running up to the gate” in an effort to try and minimise any boarding delays for passengers. Perhaps next time they should take their merry time to get to the gate in-line with their actual duty report time. Still, don’t let knowing the actual facts cloud your story or assumptions.

Of course, you could be right that this was a stand-by member of staff or he could have been unavoidably delayed but that wasn't what we were told at the gate.
If such an instance is considered out of the airline's control and not worthy of mention on board then I stand corrected.

The regulations can be tricky to navigate. Usually, delays under 3 hours don’t qualify for the standard compensation, but it’s always good to double-check the specific distance rules.
