If you read the published T&Cs kindly posted above then it should be apparent that "not paying for things" (by which I assume you mean by card or cheque) does not disqualify you from getting the payment.

In simple terms having a current account, paying money in each month, and having some savings or a mortgage, was sufficient.

Regarding advanced warning, since they launched the Fairer Share scheme Nationwide have never explicitly confirmed whether it'll happen each year until after the fact in April/May. However since the conditions have remained so consistent each years it's fairly easy to take a note and do the best you can to try to qualify when Jan/Feb/Mar come around. Given Nationwide have been trumpting the scheme in adverts, billboards, promotions etc. as a loss-leader, it's fairly likely they now see this as a 'USP' so would likely want to keep it going; however as more customers become savvy enough to make themselves eligible it is worth bearing in mind the rules may become stricter or the payments smaller to stop the scheme becoming cost-prohibitive as Nationwide gains more qualifying members.

To ensure you get the fairer share payment next time, assuming criteria stay the same, circulate £1000 twice or £500 four times and have £100 or more in a savings account.

I've missed the bit about the savings account then. That's where my wife has bagged her. FSP as she has a savings account with them.
