Hiya!
There are a couple of reasonably priced hotels along the waterfront.
Dolby Hotel:-

Ibis Hotel:-

Campanile:-

You can have a stroll down the waterfont on your way to the Tall Ships.0 -
Albert Dock Holiday Inn Express overlooks the very spot where the Tall Ships usualls dock0
-
depending what you're after you could have a private room at the international inn...

Thanks for all the replies unfortunately most are fully booked for the dates we wanted and there are so many bad reviews of the Formule1 hotel on Trip Advisor I wouldnt want to risk staying there0

sound like you need to try www.travelsupermarket .com - i tend to work my way from the cheapest and checking www.tripadvisor.com for reviews.
If no joy then try somewhere on the wirral; at the far end chester is on 35 mins (about £3.40 rtn ) on train away.0 -
these are all local to the albert dock

If you are willing to stay a bit further out then there is an Innkeepers Lodge on Aigburth road which has a good local train service (about 15 mins from city) and 24 hour buses nearby (20 mins from city)0

Also, this place has great reveiws on trip advisor and is at the top end of town, around a 15 min walk from the river and right on a very frequent bus route into town http://www.embassie.com/
There are also good reveiws (with 1 exception) for the Pineapple http://www.thepineapplehotel.co.uk/ now don't be fooled, its more like a B & B but is apparently clean and the staff are very friendly. It is in an area called Dingle which is fairly near town but not one of the smartest places to stay but safe enough. It is on a good bus route and there are always black cabs in the area as its near the womens hospital.0 -
I work in Liverpool University and when we are holding events we advise people to contact the Tourist Board for accomodation (you can do it on-line)

Another alternative, depending on what type of break you want is to stay in somewhere like Southport (a nice coastal town with lovely shops to look around) which is about 30 minutes away by train from Liverpool.
