PayPal is indeed more convenience but if things go wrong you are reliant on PayPal rather than your credit card and I believe the protections on a a credit card are stronger than those on Paypal

Got it! For the benefit of anybody else wishing to distance themself from Shopify, all I had to do was search for "shop pay opt-out", enter phone number on the form that came up, enter validation code when sent, and job done 😁

Thanks to Vitor for the clarification.

No, it means that the website is running on the Shopify platform, they are massive, represent about 25% of the top 100,000 grossing websites. The next 3 largest together represent 25% and the remaining 50% are made up of hundreds of different platforms and self built options.

Shopify allows its customers (people running e-commerce websites) to either use Shop or have their own payment processor. It's down to the merchant if they offer one, the other or both. If a merchant uses both then you can chose which of the two you use.

The theoretical advantage of Shop is a) you are giving your card details to a massive multinational organisation based in Canada rather than some potentially small unknown company in the far east with unknown security on storing card details and b) you can reuse the stored card details on any website offering the Shop payment method

Shop has its own app, irrespective if you have paid via them or not you can track all your Shopify based orders there and you could use it to delete card numbers you've asked them to store if you change your mind.

One to be tested… I'd argue they are closer to SumUp in nature, not an acquiring bank themselves but acting as a modern alternative, than the likes of PayPal where consumers have an account that can hold balances etc.

I know this site brought up the Q a few years ago and didnt offer an answer but I've never been able to find a complaint on the Ombudsman which may imply because banks arent trying to claim they are an extra party in the supply chain but would caveat that generally the ombudsman doesnt name anyone other than the firm being complained against which would be the card issuer so cant be fully confident.
