Shopify - do I have to use it?

I am ancient, and I tend to be very wary of making payments on the internet. Most times, I'm sufficiently reassured by having to enter my card details (not saved on any site as far as I know) and then do the thing with a code to my mobile phone.

But every now and then, I am invited to pay with "SHOP", which I understand to mean that the merchant has signed up to Shopify.

Two questions. When invited so to do, do I have to go along with the process, or can I somehow pay by card there without using "SHOP"? And what would happen next time I want to shop there if I can somehow delete my stored card details (which I didn't realise it had!)?

That's pretty much right. Shopify are a service that allows a retailer or service provider to create a website to sell their products and/or services.

Part of the Shopify service is that it can (if the creator wishes) process payments for them - this service is called Shop Pay - it's well-established and is generally considered safe, although this doesn't automatically confer any rights or legitimacy to the underlying business who take your money.

It might offer to retain your card details but it most certainly shouldn't be a requirement (unless you were paying by some kind of instalment plan) and it shouldn't do so by default.

Apologies - was renewing my Spotify sub this AM and got confused - they have no connection with each other.

    Post corrected.

Fine 😊. I don't use these things so clueless but you used both names.

Much obliged. So, if it's actually Shopify who have my card details, presumably it's them who I ask to kindly delete them?

I've not checked but why do you think they retain your card details?

You don’t normally have to use Shop Pay. It is Shopify’s fast checkout service, not the same as the shop merely using Shopify. Look for “pay by card”, “checkout as guest”, or scroll past the express checkout buttons. Some sites make this less obvious.

If Shop Pay has stored your card, you can remove it in Shop Pay settings or opt out via Shopify’s Shop Pay help page. Next time, you should just enter your card details again.

They do, I use Shop a lot as many retailers I shop from use them. They save your card details for ease of check out.

If you use the shop pay option with your credit card do you still have a 75 protection i.e.arw you paying a third party or are they just payment processors

Years ago I decided to set up a PayPal account linked to one of my credit cards, for pretty much all online merchant purchases to avoid using my card direct on a host of random sites.

This does of course mean treating PayPal as a 'trusted' intermediary to keep my account details safe at all time, but the widespread acceptance of PayPal as a payment medium is tremendously convenient, together with my automatic access to PayPal credit pay in 3 or 4 interest free instalments for purchases of a few hundred pounds.

With regard to the OPs question, needless to say PayPal is accepted on Shopify.
