Attendance Allowance qualification?
Hi,
My uncle is 91 and lives on his own in a rented house. He has two hip replacements one of which is getting more and more painful making it harder for him to get around. He can only be on his feet for a short time before he has to sit down to and recover.
He also suffers from Macular degeneration of the eyes so has to use a big magnifying glass to read anything.
My question is would he be considered a candidate for claiming Attendance Allowance?

If he has been issued with a certificate of sight impairment that is usually enough to qualify for Attendance Allowance.

It sounds very much like he would qualify, but the application forms can be a bit daunting. It’s well worth asking the CAB or Age Uk to help completing them, as they have experience of the best way to answer the questions, which seem to be repetitive, but may have a different focus.

I concur. I’ve helped quite a few people get Attendance Allowance and, fingers crossed, I’ve had a 100% success rate. (I used to be a Citizens advice volunteer). It’s best to make an appointment so your uncle won’t have to wait too long.
On another issue has he investigated whether he can have a 2nd hip replacement. See the following from the NHS website“There is no strict upper or lower age limit for a hip replacement. Eligibility is determined by your pain, disability, and overall health rather than your exact age.”
