Ex Dividend dates
Can anyone shed any light on this for me please when Investing in a S&S isa, I have a query about Ex-dividend dates and the T+2 settlement cycle which someone more experienced may be able to answer, I recently bought an etf which proceeded to go a bit gangbusters before the ex dividend date, as in it was in profit by 3x what the dividend payout would have been so I decided to take my profits and exit the position to avoid the inevitable ex div day dip, ex dividend date was the 18th, I sold on the morning of the 17th and therefore assumed I would not qualify for the dividend payout, however I have received the dividend payout, Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining! I'm just confused. So, the T+2 thing, I always assumed only applied on the buy side, i.e to meet a dividend date of the 18th I'd need to purchase my position on the 15th or before, but it would appear it also happens on the sell side, can anyone confirm? handy to know if true

It's the record date not the ex-div date that matters. The record date is usually the business day before the ex-div date. As it can take a day or two for a sake to fully settle, if you sold the shares on the 17th you would still be the registered owner as of the record date.
If T+2 only applied on the buy side, you could end up with shares where no-one got the dividend.

No it isn’t, the record date date is one or two days later depending on whether it’s T+1 or T+2 settlement e.g., if T+2 and the ex-d was 18/06 then the record date would be 19/06: 17/07 +2.
If the OP tells us the ETF we can look it up. I suspect there’s a misunderstanding somewhere.
Example dividend declaration:
“The ex-dividend date is 25 June 2026, the record date is 26 June 2026, and the payment date is 14 July 2026.”

Did the sale actually complete on the 18th? 17th May was a sunday, so maybe you still held the shares on ex-div day and therefore got the dividend?

June, not may

When was the order executed? Did you place it on the 17th but it was executed on the 18th? Your contract note will tell you.
