With this hot weather - we need another fan

Which is a good buy ?

Dyson cool tower ? seems vastly overpriced (£350) but is whisper quiet and claims to cool the air (how on 56watts) - surely it just moves the air about and can't actually cool it ?

Cheaper versions - such as DREO Nomad One Tower Fan at £85

We don't want a spinning blades type and it will need to be on overnight, so cheap running costs

Dyson's own website doesnt claim it cools the air, it claims it cools you down not the air, which it will do. The air it technically will heat up given the heat you are losing doesnt simply disappear (first law of thermodynamics) plus the motor generating the airflow will heat up but at 56w probably less than others.

Given a fan has a constant sound personally never found any issues sleeping with any standard fan - industrial size ones are a different matter. We live close to the road too so a bit of fan noise masks the occasional loud night time passer by (foxes or drunk revellers). Really depends on how much you value the look of the item -v- a cheap basic fan that will simply do the job

I know you said that you did not want a spinning fan, but I would highly recommend the Meaco 1056 White Desk Fan - 12 Inch, available from Argos.
I do not like any noise whilst sleeping, but I can honestly say I do not notice with this fan.

From that list of 11 fans, I would buy the Igenix DF0030 for £33. I might pay slightly more for a similar model with remote control, as that can be useful. I like the Ansio tower fans, can buy from Amazon or directly - I like their different wind modes, more comfortable than just being constantly pummelled by air.

The rest are a waste of money, they will all perform the same function. I haven't found the Dyson fans to be noticeably quieter. I just set our tower fan to a comfortable setting, a compromise in terms of noise and air flow. I find that the high setting on the fans is uncomfortable anyway, so comparing maximum air flow rates is irrelevant.

I only have experience of the MyCarbon fans, as MIL has one.

Impressively quiet - silent on lower settings - and powerful. Desk fan, around £90. Has all the stuff you should want - remote control, oscillating, and tha'.

SWMBO would beg to differ. It is electronically speed controlled, and the driver makes obtrusive twittering/whistling noises that vary with the speed setting (even I, with HF hearing loss, can hear it). We do still take it away on holiday to use. It's also a pita as one can't turn on/off by the mains (or a smart switch) as it forgets the set speed AND it has brightly illuminated switch/display (blutak and dark card needed).

Fortunately we have a split pack aircon in the bedroom, which is very quiet and an acceptable LF drone, mostly.

We had a ceiling fan over the bed in a previous house… Worked well (too well, needed a slower speed setting). Larger blades moving slower is likely the way to go?

Consider a 12-15 inch diameter 'box fan' style with rotating louvres - we have an ancient 'Challenge' brand one (from Focus DIY?) which is used from time to time.

I second the Meaco fan. Ours has 10 speed settings and we can have it on up to 4 in the bedroom at night. As with all these, it's the air movement that cools you, and this does a good job especially with the vertical and horizontal oscillation. The remote has limited distance, but we don't really use it.

I've got a Dyson in the bedroom, quite and does the job. I've had it for ages, not sure on model but it also acts as a heater. which I don't use it for save when my central heating went kaput a few years ago. Has remote control.

My best buy is a small Woozoo globe fan which goes side to side and up and down and remote control. Really quiet and powerful. It does have blades but it's fully enclosed. It cost around £45 when I bought it. I have this fan in the lounge and it's just as good as the Dyson IMO.

We got a cheapo Signature 29” 3 Speed Tower Fan with Oscillation, Adjustable Tilt, Black, S40012B from Amazon last year for £21. It is plasticy but it doesn't make too much noise, has a timer, and is light enough to carry around. It's a no-frills one.

Only issue with it in the bedroom is the height of it as it's too short to blow towards our bed so it sits on a pedestal.

In contrast, a relative has a Levoit 20dB Silent Tower Fan, 5.5W-26W Energy Saving Fan, a more premium solid fan and works really well although they live up in the North and that costs £250.

Part of me thinks that if you are looking to spend Dyson price, I would be inclined to look into A/C portable unit with a sleep mode instead.

Consider evaporative air cooler instead.

My normal fan just circulating hot air in the room. Not much of a help.

The Dyson produces a smooth consistent flow of air, I find the inconsistent buffeting flow of air from a normal fan to be much more pleasant.

For night time, the biggest 5 blade ceiling fan you can get on slow speed above the bed, it's wonderful.
