Octopus.Pulling the wool....
Have been with Octopus for years and pleased with it until now.
I do not want a smart meter.
With the new tariff coming out on July 1st I have told them I do not want the E7 tariff any longer and to switch me to the flat rate standard flexible productT on July 1st.They won't saying that my E7 meter must be replaced with a smart meter.Since the RTS switch off I am recording usage on the normal meter and obviously nothing on the E7 meter,it is redundant.I say my plan for the flat rate tariff on the old meter and leaving the redundant E7 meter in situ.is sound. What do you think?

I think you should just let them replace it all with Smart Meters. There are no sensible downsides to having a smart meter.

Get a smart meter, youll save money.

I'd get them to install their smart meter and ask them to register it as a Class 1 Profile (single rate) and then shop around. Octopus are expensive these days. If you don't, you'll be forever stuck on the high E7 day rate with that old meter unless you are extremely lucky, and can find another supplier who'll agree to manually change the class profile of the old mechanical meter.

Read the small print in your contract - Somewhere it will say that you agree to having a smart meter installed.
Just about every other energy supplier will have the same clause.
Good chance that your current meter is getting to the end of it's certified life, so will need replacing anyway.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

This is a forum about money saving and a smart meter gives you ways of saving money that you cannot access without one. So I suspect that the majority of people who answer will focus on your desire not to have a smart meter rather than whether you could be billed the way you want without one.

It's section 16 of the standard T&C.

As others have said take the smart meter, this is a money saving forum and smart meters save consumers money.
It really is the only answer you will get here from the majority or you could try some niche "smart meter not for me" groups on Facebook or Reddit where you can all live happily ever after.

I can't believe that these threads continue to be a regular thing.
I've had a smartmeter since 2011 (15 years) the only thing that has happened in the last one and a half decades is I have saved lots wasted time reading meters and have a much better understanding of my energy usage, thereby saving me hundreds if not thousands of pounds over this time.
It's a living nightmare!
• The rich buy assets.
• The poor only have expenses.
• The middle class buy liabilities they think are assets.2 -
It might be that you can persuade Octopus to bill you on the combined readings from the existing meter but at a single rate - but that will depend on a number of thigs ranging from the age of that current meter - if it is out of certification then they will simply need to replace it - to whether they want to do that, quite frankly. One of th advantages of modern meters is that they can be switched between TOU tariffs and standard ones without needing the whole meter to be changed, or complex billing.
Can you enlarge on your reservations around smart meters? The vast majority of the concerns that folk have about them stem from misinformation that has been put out there by those who intend to do harm or mischief by it, or from misunderstandings around things. If you explain your concerns there is a very good chance that people here will be able to de-bunk the myths.

I am in the same position as you and have agreed to them replacing my meter with a smart meter. The main problem is finding a slot for an engineer on their website. Well there was a second problem in that some birds had raised a nest of chicks in my meter box and I did not want to disturb them. I think they have flown off now but will give it a couple of weeks before I check ad try to rebook..
