Octopus announces the "Nook" Plug in Battery

Very interesting development. Two offerings coming next year:

1) Nook - For renters and flats:  A compact, shoebox-sized 2kWh battery that you literally just plug straight into a standard wall socket. No drilling, no landlord permission. It stores cheap off-peak energy and can be stacked .

"You can stack up to five of them to get 10 kilowatt hours, even if you don't have solar panels, they'll pay for themselves in two or three years, and thereafter just keep saving money, because they'll be able to use the cheapest electricity on the grid to charge up, and you'll be able to use it in your home, and if you do have solar panels, it should be an absolute no-brainer." - Greg Jackson

2) Nook Colossus - For homeowners: A sleek, wall-mounted 10kWh system installed by Octopus engineers, stackable up to 30kWh.

"It's 10kWh and you can stack up to three of them. It'll be about a third cheaper than the best known battery brands, and all of these batteries will come with Octopus Intelligence built in, so they'll optimise immediately against smart tariffs to start saving you money." - Greg Jackson

Note that the draft "Plug-in solar device interim product specification" doesn't allow for batteries.

Apparently, I'm hearing that these products are just rebadged Fox ESS batteries:

    Fox MiniQube 2.1kWh

    Fox Evo All-in-One 10kWh

At the bottom of the page for the MiniQube, they do note that this is effectively a plug-in battery/solar system and that it may not currently meet the UK regulatory requirements - so not quite plug and play just yet, legally at least.

I'm unable to find any pricing on the MiniQube (maybe £500??), but I did find a wholesale price of £3468 for the 10kWh Evo All-in-One with 10kW inverter (3 MPPTs) bundle.

For comparison, a 13.5kWh (with 11kW inverter) Tesla PW3 (without Gateway) is £5000 from Tesla in the UK, so the Fox unit is 70% of the cost and provides 75% of the storage. Unless Octopus can install these very cheaply and apply economies of scale, they do not look like they are substantially cheaper that a PW3 on a cost per kWh basis.

Not to mention, the PW3 leaves Fox batteries in the dust in real world performance, durability etc.

It would be a shame to see Octopus go this direction but not surprising as Chinese kit is becoming core to the growth engine that is powering the company! Unethical JA Solar Panels, Ming Yang Turbines and now this.
