The apps allow you to set things like "switch on xx minutes before sunset" and "switch off at midnight", or whatever suits you. Once programmed the light does that until it is told otherwise, you don't even need the app to be running. Tends to be a bit more expensive solution than a smart bulb, and requires more installation, like it has to connect to your WiFi, but I use them to great effect for internal lighting for security and convenience. Just have a PIR triggered light outside.

Our
Our smart switches are programmed to come on at dusk (be that 5.30 or 9.30) and turn off at 10pm - don't ask me how, it's controlled by Alexa! The only issue we have at this time of year is that they turn on after 10pm for a couple of weeks so we have to remember to turn them off at night!

I have various smart switches. Some programmed to come on, others require the app or (God forbid!) manually switching on. However, all are programmed to go off at 11pm regardless. Plus there's a "backup" task to switch everything off at midnight in case one gets missed, or is turned on after 11pm. 🙂
