    The apps allow you to set things like "switch on xx minutes before sunset" and "switch off at midnight", or whatever suits you. Once programmed the light does that until it is told otherwise, you don't even need the app to be running. Tends to be a bit more expensive solution than a smart bulb, and requires more installation, like it has to connect to your WiFi, but I use them to great effect for internal lighting for security and convenience. Just have a PIR triggered light outside.
