nice meals out in the evening

    :)

Well at night actually - many places don't start serving very early. Some regard 9pm or even 10 as eccentrically early...

There's a huge flea market on Sundays, if you like that kind of thing, and there's some really good shopping. Does that help?

as long as you like bar-hopping and eating fantastic food you'll be fine. Otherwise I wouldn't really bother...

I had a week's business trip there last month. It is a fantastic city.

Be sure to visit Naturbier in Plaza Santa Ana. It is a microbrewery, a rarity in Spain, but one with a difference - if you sit in the restaurant area in the cellar the beer pumps are in the middle of your table. This makes for a really fun evening as you just help yourself to either the pilsner or dark beer from the pump whenever you want to and simply pay the bill at the end for the amount of beer consumed. Each table's consumption is displayed on a computer screen on the wall, which in the case of the 40 people I took to dinner turned into a rather rowdy contest to see which table could consume the most. It certainly won't be to everyone's taste, but if you like beer and great tapas then it is worth a visit.

  • It is worth going there simply to eat fish. It has the reputation of having the best in Spain and that really is saying something! Food, in general, is great and you can happily be eating a meal well after midnight on a pavement table in Gran Via at virtually any time of the year!
If you do get bored, lots of the cinemas show English language films, the Yelmo for example. Look for VO in the listings, which means version original.
Just being in Madrid, tho, is an experience in itself. I go there lots on business.
