Advice On Buying A Bed

Buying a bed has changed - based on how you sleep. On your back, a more firmer bed. On your side, a softer bed.

I tend to sleep on my side so maybe a soft or medium soft one.

Looking at Bensons they seem to take things up flights off stairs and will removed the old bed and they are national and have a wide choice so I think I will go with them.

BUDGET is key.

I am 6 footish and a standard single too short 6x3 ft as is a double 6 x 4.5 ft, but one can lie diagonally…

Quality pocket sprung natural (wool) filled double sided (turn over to even wear/settling) on a sprung base is what we went for this time. As super king (two large singles 6.5 x3 ft side by side). Cost a small fortune but worth it.

Memory foams are hot to sleep on and anyone who says otherwise is cold blooded. 😈😈

company won't take away the old bed and mattress so it's no good.

What about your local council or a local waste disposal co? Cost should be around the same as any co taking a bed away for disposal.

I don’t think there is that many independent bed retailers left. For sure the one in our nearest town, and the next nearest, have both closed.

Again the OP was features not reviews:

what sort of things I should take into account when buying (a) a bed base and (b) a mattress or should I get a divan, as they come with a mattress?

Advice from a number of bed manufacturers or retailers will tell you what the purpose is and how they might be sold, divans, wooden/metal frames, how mattress construction might differ etc.

Reviews of beds are entirely different.

So I'll reiterate my original comment ask a question on a search engine and see what it says about pros and cons of divan beds, or bunk beds, or quilted mattresses or foam mattresses.

Then if the OP fancies a particular bed type or mattress type perhaps seek independent reviews.

I need them to take the old bed away the same time as the new one is delivered and if I have to rely on the council or another party to take away the old bed and mattress I risk them coming after the delivery and storing a double bed and mattress would be difficult. Bensons do disposal so I think I will buy a new bed from them.

The current mattress is a Dunlopillo Millennium latex one; it's fine but I'm not that keen on it. I am thinking of buying this bed, which has a mattress that has a combination of latex and springs.

That looks nice. Obviously, it's only the frame, so you'll need the more important part - the mattress - separately.

We recently went 'Emma', and it was a significant improvement over our old Mem-Foam Silentnight 7, which was 'ok' to begin with, but became disappointing before too long. When I cut it up for disposal, the foam layers had really deteriorated.

With Emma, I have to say I sleep like the proverbial log, and wake up in fair order. Wife ditto. No aches, no pains. So, happy with Emma.

But, lawdie, had an overnight stay in a Premier Inn this week, and their initially, "Oh, that's quite firm!" mattress was sooopreemly comfy, I think a different order again. A Google says it's ironically made by Silentnight ('Premier Inn 2'), but has springs as well as foam. (Edit - apparently now Hypnos.)

I think, bottom line, go for springs and a foam layer, and a decent make, and you should be good to go. I don't think soft/med/firm makes that much difference, at least not unless you have special needs.

I remember over 30 years ago before the internet there was a company called "dial-a-bed". We got their price list. We then went to a very posh furniture shop and tried some beds. We said to the salesman that we would love to buy from them but you are so much more expensive than "dial-a-bed". He walked round offering hundreds of pounds off every bed. We actually paid less than "dial-a-bed". Just made us realise how much profit there was. Don't know if going to a furniture shop and requesting online prices would work today.
