Could it be a simple error by broker & a wrong address?

Not an address mix up which was the original thinking. The other company has a very different address and were not trying to change suppliers.

The broker appears to have started a contract at my address, with my meter information, for this other company who had no knowledge of such until the energy company started corresponding with them. The contract commenced the day after the previous tenant left. Weeks before I took on the tenancy.

My experience of brokers is very aggressive cold calling. The day after starting a tenancy in an unrelated address previously, my phone started ringing from 7am with brokers posing as ‘the energy company’ and ‘needing to sort the utilities asap.

There is some kind of database that brokers access and can see when an energy contract ends/tenancy changes, and they attempt to get the tenant to sign up. How they get people’s details is unclear.

This time, at this new premises, I was prepared and when my phone started ringing the next day after taking on the tenancy, I simply ignored all calls. It was relentless, literally every few minutes for days.

Hence there can be no audio recording of myself because (a), I refused to engage via phone deliberately and (b), the erroneous contract was started long before I became a tenant.
