Things have changed since I was claiming benefits if that's the case now (not doubting it). We were told it would affect any Income Related benefits as we had effectively resigned.

Employment Rights Act 1996 made voluntary redundancy classed legally as dismissal rather than a resignation.

Interesting. I was made redundant in 2004 and we were all given the advice I posted earlier. Somebody wasn't up to date with legislation! Thanks for the correction.

That's one of the reasons I think a forum such as this is better than a single source of info, as the advice on here if wrong will be corrected.

Agreed, the MSE hive mind is a powerful thing. Benefits are an immensely complicated area, and no one person can ever be expected to know everything (or even close to it), so we all rely on each other and learn as we go. If you haven't learnt something new every day, it's been a waste of a day.

I should clarify that we weren't told this by some guy who'd heard it from somebody in the pub. The firm had employed a company who specialised in redundancy planning and advice!

22 years is a long time where legislation goes.

You've missed the point that HillStreetBlues said the rules changed in 1996, but we were given the wrong information and advice in 2004.
