You assume the wifi on a train would actually work.

Yes, well, usually i find it working.

I would. I've booked flights on public WiFi and had no problem

I suspect the OP is concerned about the security of his device and bank details when using public wi-fi and not whether the action is possible

Then they could use a VPN to enhance the security, the reality is the vast majority use public wifi without any incident but like crossing the road, its ultimately not 100% risk free

Well yes, I was being slightly sarcastic. Recently spent two hours on a mainline operator, in first class, where the WiFi was no more than a trickle and wouldnt connect to absolutely anything.

The biggest risk is someone seeing the laptop screen when you're entering the details. Nearly all websites these days use https, and definitely any that ask for bank details, which encrypts network traffic. See HTTPS - Wikipedia for the technical details.

As RealName mentioned, with any public WiFi it really needs a VPN for security.

As above, stability of internet connection in any moving vehicle is more of a risk than the security of the various websites used to book. If the booking needs to be done and it can't wait I'd switch to mobile network rather than rely on wifi on a train. In reality I'd wait until I had a stable connection.

Agreed, always the worst of online financial interactions - something breaks and you are unsure if the transaction has completed or not.
Travelodge have a phone number for bookings.
