You can find the dimensions permitted on easyJet, Jet2 and TUI on their websites. I'd worth checking direct, as comments online or AI may not have the latest up to date information.

I suggest you get the stuff you'd take in hand luggage together and see what size bag it all fits in.

Then check the hand luggage rules for easyjet, TUI & Jet2 on each airlines website and see what size you need.

Soon to be travelling with Jet2 and discovered my hand luggage is small enough to fit under the seat (40cm x 30 x 20) and is guaranteed to go in the cabin. I like to have a bag under the seat as I'm small and use it as a footrest.

    I could also take another 10kg bag max 56cm x 45 x 25.

This would go in the overhead locker but may have to go into the hold at busy times.

I prefer to travel light but my small case will easily take a change of clothes, paperback book, jacket, a few toiletries (deodorant, hand wash, toothbrush/toothpaste), sunglasses.

I know you can buy toiletries airside but I prefer to have the size and brand I want.

There's no right and wrong answer to your question, you need to do the research to ensure you have a bag big enough to take your stuff and small enough to satisfy airline regulations.

I was just browsing for a rucksack for work when I noted that this item states "Machine wash cold and tumble dry low".

There must be other bags with the same capability - this one does not seem exceptional so far as I can tell.

Unfortunately that one might be too big for most airlines, unless it’s not fully packed.
I’ve washed several rucksacks in a washing machine without any problems. I haven’t tried to wash any with solid ‘stiffening’ in the main compartment as I suspect it’s cardboard which might disintegrate.

Yes, it might be - I did not check the size. I was simply looking for a bag for myself and noted that this bag stated it was washable. I assume other bags are similarly washable and that would include bags in the correct size for onboard use.

I think what was most useful was the standard Amazon listing including a category under "Materials and Care" that answers the question the OP has and makes it relatively easy to check the compliance once a suitable bag is identified. In the case of the linked bag, the text is as follows "

    Product Care Instructions

Machine wash cold and tumble dry low

    "
