Sky full fibre install query

Hi

I called Now broadband today seeking a better broadband deal. I'm currently on bog standard broadband with an active traditional landline.

I was put through to Sky to discuss full fibre, as it's available in my area. He offered a reasonable price for fibre 150 with the digital landline.

I specifically asked the agent at least twice if an engineer would need to install a box inside my home; he said no, it's just a box on the outside wall that will be required.

I've since watched a video guide on a link sent by Open Reach on the install and what to expect and there will be an ONT box fitted.

My next door neighbour who is in an upstairs flat like me had his fibre box fitted in his bedroom which I'm really not keen on. The bedrooms are at the front of the building with the living rooms at the back.

I'm not really fussed about having fibre itself - a cheaper monthly cost and a router that doesn't drop connection as often would do me.

Was the Sky agent fibbing? If I go ahead with the fibre install are there any other practical alternatives if I don't want the wall box/router in my bedroom?

Thank you.

There has to be an ONT box on the inside wall at the point of entry to the house; it converts the incoming fibre connection to Ethernet; you then run a LAN cable from the ONT to the router.

The ONT is abit bigger than a wall socket and needs to be powered from a wall-wart; it does have some LED lights.

The router iself doesn't have to be immediately next to the ONT, but it does have to be cable-connected.

There'll be YouTube videos of people's installations.

The installer will listen and depending on what you want try to put the ONT (the white mains powered internal box ) where you want it within reason , but there are practical and time based restrictions on what they will do , so if for argument the external cable appears at the front of the building and the CSP (external wall block ) is fitted at the front , they won’t run the internal cable from this block through the entire interior, through various rooms etc to get to the rear , but if for example there was an easy way to get from the front wall to the rear external wall , cabling safely and quickly on the external wall they may consider that , you won’t know for sure until the installer turns up .

If you neighbours property is very similar to yours you should assume your installation will be very similar and accept that , and if the installer considers your request for anything different as a bonus ….if this is not going to be acceptable, cancel and stay as you are (out of contract so paying a little more ) with Now , that saves wasting your time and the installers time .

    Thank you.

I am annoyed that the Sky agent misinformed me but at least I have a good idea of what to expect now.

I suppose I'll have to go with the ONT box in the bedroom and ask that it's fitted in an unobtrusive corner.

TBH the ONT isn’t very large , and if it’s in a bedroom and its LED’s are noticeable at night , a bit of tape over them solves that , you can run your own Ethernet cable to somewhere else if you don’t want the router in the same location as the ONT…this assumes it’s Openreach , Sky use City Fibre and Openreach networks , presumably CF is similar.

Well he obviously wasn't "fibbing", just badly informed.

As the router connects via an ethernet cable you can place the router anywhere within the property, just don't expect the person fitting it to do that for you.
