I am also a huge geek (and nerd), which is why I have been a customer of A&A for well over two decades, and have been reading XKCD since before 806, though 979 "Wisdom of the ancients" is my favorite.

Zen have seemed approachable when I've spoken to them about switching to them. Haven't yet had to ask about any customer service issues.

I got through to a human with Vodafone on my activation date when it was not working, all sorted next day, found the caller helpful and friendly.

I would highly recommend Aquiss. Family run broadband provider with excellent customer service.

If you go to the ISPreview website, there is a list of broadband providers ranked on customer service. The first thing to do is to check what services you can get at your address using the broadband checkers on the respective company websites and/or the Openreach wholesale website. You may also have other full fibre providers who have built infrastructure in your area.

A lot of the good customer service providers have fixed prices for the entire length of any contract albeit with slightly higher prices than the ones advertised on television. However you get exactly what it says on the tin and won't have to deal with the issues you described.
