Ex MOD property.
Hello,
I am in the process of potentially making an offer on a ex MOD (RAF) 2 bedroom married quarters. There is no mains gas so it currently has old fashioned storage heaters, these will need replacing so I have budgeted for this in my offer, has anyone got experience with the newer high heat retention storage heaters?
Also if there anything in particular with regards to ex military housing that anyone with experience thinks I should check?
Thanks everyone.

You could look to replace the storage heaters with an air source heat pump or as it's a smaller property air to air system(what people think are just Aircon units but actually heat as well), perfect time if redecorating and making the house your own?

Has the estate as a whole been sold off, or just a few units?
One of the risks if the estate is still partially owned by MOD (ex Annington?) is they may want to redevelop it, which could include using CPO powers to acquire units sold off in the past. The fewer homes still in MOD ownership the less likely a scheme like this might happen.
Otherwise the risks are broadly the same as with LA housing - e.g. building defects, shared services, unadopted roads, and (if units are still in MOD ownership) the possibility of having neighbours you (or your future buyers) might not want to live near.

Hello,
As far as I'm aware the whole estate was sold off in 2006 as the main part of the base is now a business park and the vast majority of the houses are occupied buy people who have purchased them. The building's that are boarded up are the single person accommodation blocks and some miscellaneous buildings such as the airman's restaurant.

Thanks, I will certainly look into this, just looking for the most cost effective upgrade as I will need to redecorate the place also.

I would do some additional research on what the boarded up buildings might be used for, and also who currently owns them. Local newspapers and planning applications could give you some clues.

In terms of research, the best people to ask are usually the local community so find a local FB page and someone is bound to know.

Ex military house generally had generous gardens and depending upon where the house might be eg end terrace there is scope to enhance quite significantly.
I would seek assurance of what was done when they were sold off as Annington were renowned for shabby service, things like painting over 40 years of existing gloss and chucking up a canopy over the front door and saying they'd been upgraded.
Did the vendor buy it from MOD/Annington, have they done anything at all?
Are you prepared to divulge the location as differing camps often had reputations for good or bad married quarters.

That was the process long before Annington got involved, when the MQs were owned and controlled by each station/unit.

Ref the high heat retention storage heaters, or other options, it's worth a browse/search of the Energy forum, or one if its sub forums.
There's been lots of discussions of the HHR ones (Dimplex and Elnur spring to mind), and some of the regular posters have good knowledge of those and heat pumps.
Edited to add, I meant Dimplex, not Dimple. Auto-uncorrect happened there.

Dimplex quantums are excellent storage heaters
